Alif Lām Mīm Alif, Lām, Mīm.
Tilka āyātu al-kitābi al-ḥakīm These are the verses of the Wise Book,
Hudan wa raḥmatan lil-muḥsinīn a guidance and a mercy for the doers of good,
Alladhīna yuqīmūna aṣ-ṣalāh wa yu’tūna az-zakāh wa hum bil-ākhirati hum yūqinūn those who establish prayer, give charity, and have certainty in the Hereafter,
Ulā’ika ‘alā hudan min rabbihim wa ulā’ika humu al-mufliḥūn they are upon guidance from their Lord, and they are the successful.
Wa mina an-nāsi man yashtarī lahwa al-ḥadīthi li-yuḍilla ‘an sabīli ALLAH bighayri ‘ilmin wa yattakhidhahā huzuwan; ulā’ika lahum ‘adhābun muhīn And among people are those who purchase idle talk to mislead others from the way of GOD without knowledge and take it in ridicule. For them is a humiliating punishment.

Verses 7-11

Verse Arabic Transliteration English
31:7 وَإِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ آيَاتُنَا وَلَّىٰ مُسْتَكْبِرًا كَأَن لَّمْ يَسْمَعْهَا كَأَنَّ فِي أُذُنَيْهِ وَقْرًا ۖ فَبَشِّرْهُ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ Wa idhā tutlā ‘alayhi āyātunā wallā mustakbiran ka’an lam yasma‘hā ka’anna fī udhunayhi waqrā; fabashshirhu bi‘adhābin alīm And when Our verses are recited to him, he turns away in arrogance as if he had not heard them, as if there were deafness in his ears. So give him tidings of a painful punishment.
Inna alladhīna āmanū wa ‘amilū aṣ-ṣāliḥāti lahum jannātu an-na‘īm Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds will have the Gardens of Delight,
Khālidīna fīhā; wa‘da ALLAH ḥaqqā; wa huwa al-‘azīzu al-ḥakīm abiding therein forever—the promise of ALLAH in truth. And He is the Mighty, the Wise.
31:10 خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ بِغَيْرِ عَمَدٍ تَرَوْنَهَا ۖ وَأَلْقَىٰ فِي الْأَرْضِ رَوَاسِيَ أَن تَمِيدَ بِكُمْ وَبَثَّ فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ دَابَّةٍ ۚ وَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً فَأَنبَتْنَا فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ زَوْجٍ كَرِيمٍ Khalaqa as-samāwāti bighayri ‘amadin tarawnahā wa alqā fī al-arḍi rawāsiya an tamīda bikum wa baththa fīhā min kulli dābbah; wa anzalnā mina as-samā’i mā’an fa-anbatnā fīhā min kulli zawjin karīm He created the heavens without pillars that you see and placed within the earth firmly set mountains lest it should shake with you, and He dispersed therein every kind of creature. And We sent down water from the sky and caused to grow therein every noble kind.
31:11 هَٰذَا خَلْقُ اللَّهِ فَأَرُونِي مَاذَا خَلَقَ الَّذِينَ مِن دُونِهِ ۚ بَلِ الظَّالِمُونَ فِي ضَلَالٍ مُّبِينٍ Hādhā khalqu ALLAH fa-arūnī mādhā khalaqa alladhīna min dūnih; bali aẓ-ẓālimūna fī ḍalālin mubīn This is the creation of ALLAH, so show Me what those besides Him have created. Rather, the wrongdoers are in clear error.

Verses 12-16

Verse Arabic Transliteration English
31:12 وَلَقَدْ آتَيْنَا لُقْمَانَ الْحِكْمَةَ أَنِ اشْكُرْ لِلَّهِ ۚ وَمَن يَشْكُرْ فَإِنَّمَا يَشْكُرُ لِنَفْسِهِ ۖ وَمَن كَفَرَ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ غَنِيٌّ حَمِيدٌ Wa laqad ātaynā Luqmāna al-ḥikmata ani ishkur li-ALLAH; wa man yashkur fa-innamā yashkuru linafsih; wa man kafara fa-inna ALLAH ghaniyyun ḥamīd And We certainly gave Luqmān wisdom : “Be grateful to ALLAH.” And whoever is grateful is grateful for himself; and whoever is ungrateful—then indeed, ALLAH is Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy.
31:13 وَإِذْ قَالَ لُقْمَانُ لِابْنِهِ وَهُوَ يَعِظُهُ يَا بُنَيَّ لَا تُشْرِكْ بِاللَّهِ ۖ إِنَّ الشِّرْكَ لَظُلْمٌ عَظِيمٌ Wa idh qāla Luqmānu li-ibnihi wa huwa ya‘iẓuhu yā bunayya lā tushrik bi-ALLAH; inna ash-shirka laẓulmun ‘aẓīm And when Luqmān said to his son while he was advising him: “O my son, do not associate anything with ALLAH. Indeed, association is a great ظلم (injustice).”
31:14 وَوَصَّيْنَا الْإِنسَانَ بِوَالِدَيْهِ حَمَلَتْهُ أُمُّهُ وَهْنًا عَلَىٰ وَهْنٍ وَفِصَالُهُ فِي عَامَيْنِ أَنِ اشْكُرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيْكَ إِلَيَّ الْمَصِيرُ Wa waṣṣaynā al-insāna bi-wālidayhi ḥamalat-hu ummuhu wahnan ‘alā wahnin wa fiṣāluhu fī ‘āmayn ani ishkur lī wa li-wālidayka ilayya al-maṣīr And We have enjoined upon man for his parents. His mother carried him in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. “Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the return.”
Wa in jāhadāka ‘alā an tushrika bī mā laysa laka bihi ‘ilmun falā tuṭi‘humā; wa ṣāḥibhumā fī ad-dunyā ma‘rūfan; wa ittabi‘ sabīla man anāba ilayya; thumma ilayya marji‘ukum fa-unabbi’ukum bimā kuntum ta‘malūn But if they strive to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, then do not obey them; yet keep their company in this world with kindness and follow the path of those who turn to GOD. Then to Me is your return, and I will inform you of what you used to do.
31:16 يَا بُنَيَّ إِنَّهَا إِن تَكُ مِثْقَالَ حَبَّةٍ مِّنْ خَرْدَلٍ فَتَكُن فِي صَخْرَةٍ أَوْ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ أَوْ فِي الْأَرْضِ يَأْتِ بِهَا اللَّهُ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَطِيفٌ خَبِيرٌ Yā bunayya innahā in taku mithqāla ḥabbatin min khardalin fatakun fī ṣakhratin aw fī as-samāwāti aw fī al-arḍi ya’ti bihā ALLAH; inna ALLAH laṭīfun khabīr O my son, even if it be the weight of a mustard seed, and it be within a rock or in the heavens or in the earth, ALLAH will bring it forth. Indeed, ALLAH is Subtle, All-Aware.

Verses 17-21

Verse Arabic Transliteration English
31:17 يَا بُنَيَّ أَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ وَأْمُرْ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَانْهَ عَنِ الْمُنكَرِ وَاصْبِرْ عَلَىٰ مَا أَصَابَكَ ۖ إِنَّ ذَٰلِكَ مِنْ عَزْمِ الْأُمُورِ Yā bunayya aqimi aṣ-ṣalāh wa’mur bil-ma‘rūfi wanha ‘ani al-munkar waṣbir ‘alā mā aṣābak; inna dhālika min ‘azmi al-umūr O my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, that is of the matters requiring determination.
31:18 وَلَا تُصَعِّرْ خَدَّكَ لِلنَّاسِ وَلَا تَمْشِ فِي الْأَرْضِ مَرَحًا ۖ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ كُلَّ مُخْتَالٍ فَخُورٍ Wa lā tuṣa‘‘ir khaddaka lin-nāsi wa lā tamshi fī al-arḍi maraḥā; inna ALLAH lā yuḥibbu kulla mukhtālin fakhūr And do not turn your cheek toward people, nor walk upon the earth exultantly. Indeed, ALLAH does not like every self-deluded boaster.
31:19 وَاقْصِدْ فِي مَشْيِكَ وَاغْضُضْ مِن صَوْتِكَ ۚ إِنَّ أَنكَرَ الْأَصْوَاتِ لَصَوْتُ الْحَمِيرِ Waqṣid fī mashyika waghḍuḍ min ṣawtik; inna ankara al-aṣwāti laṣawtu al-ḥamīr And be moderate in your pace and lower your voice. Indeed, the most disagreeable of sounds is the voice of donkeys.
31:20 أَلَمْ تَرَوْا أَنَّ اللَّهَ سَخَّرَ لَكُم مَّا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ وَأَسْبَغَ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعَمَهُ ظَاهِرَةً وَبَاطِنَةً ۗ وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَن يُجَادِلُ فِي اللَّهِ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ وَلَا هُدًى وَلَا كِتَابٍ مُّنِيرٍ Alam taraw anna ALLAH sakhkhara lakum mā fī as-samāwāti wa mā fī al-arḍi wa asbagha ‘alaykum ni‘amahu ẓāhiratan wa bāṭinah; wa mina an-nāsi man yujādilu fī ALLAH bighayri ‘ilmin wa lā hudan wa lā kitābin munīr Do you not see that ALLAH has subjected to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth and has lavished upon you His favors, both apparent and hidden? Yet among people is one who disputes about ALLAH without knowledge or guidance or an enlightening Book.
31:21 وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمُ اتَّبِعُوا مَا أَنزَلَ اللَّهُ قَالُوا بَلْ نَتَّبِعُ مَا وَجَدْنَا عَلَيْهِ آبَاءَنَا ۚ أَوَلَوْ كَانَ الشَّيْطَانُ يَدْعُوهُمْ إِلَىٰ عَذَابِ السَّعِيرِ Wa idhā qīla lahumu ittabi‘ū mā anzala ALLAH qālū bal nattabi‘u mā wajadnā ‘alayhi ābā’anā; awa law kāna ash-shayṭānu yad‘ūhum ilā ‘adhābi as-sa‘īr And when it is said to them, “Follow what ALLAH has revealed,” they say, “Rather, we will follow that upon which we found our fathers.” Even if Satan were inviting them to the punishment of the Blaze?

Verses 22-26

Verse Arabic Transliteration English
31:22 وَمَن يُسْلِمْ وَجْهَهُ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَهُوَ مُحْسِنٌ فَقَدِ اسْتَمْسَكَ بِالْعُرْوَةِ الْوُثْقَىٰ ۗ وَإِلَى اللَّهِ عَاقِبَةُ الْأُمُورِ Wa man yuslim wajhahu ilā ALLAH wa huwa muḥsinun faqadi istamsaka bil-‘urwati al-wuthqā; wa ilā ALLAH ‘āqibatu al-umūr And whoever submits his face to GOD while being a doer of good has grasped the most trustworthy handhold. And to GOD is the outcome of all matters.
31:23 وَمَن كَفَرَ فَلَا يَحْزُنكَ كُفْرُهُ ۚ إِلَيْنَا مَرْجِعُهُمْ فَنُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا عَمِلُوا ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ بِذَاتِ الصُّدُورِ Wa man kafara falā yaḥzunka kufruh; ilaynā marji‘uhum fa-nunabbi’uhum bimā ‘amilū; inna ALLAH ‘alīmun bidhāti aṣ-ṣudūr And whoever disbelieves—let not his disbelief grieve you. To Us is their return, and We will inform them of what they did. Indeed, ALLAH is Knowing of what is within the breasts.
Numatti‘uhum qalīlan thumma naḍṭarruhum ilā ‘adhābin ghalīẓ We grant them enjoyment for a little, then We will force them to a harsh punishment.
Wa la’in sa’altahum man khalaqa as-samāwāti wal-arḍa la-yaqūlunna ALLAH; quli al-ḥamdu li-ALLAH; bal aktharuhum lā ya‘lamūn And if you ask them, “Who created the heavens and the earth?” they will surely say, “ALLAH.” Say, “Praise be to GOD.” But most of them do not know.
31:26 لِلَّهِ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ الْغَنِيُّ الْحَمِيدُ Li-ALLAH mā fī as-samāwāti wal-arḍ; inna ALLAH huwa al-ghaniyyu al-ḥamīd To ALLAH belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. Indeed, ALLAH is the Self-Sufficient, the Praiseworthy.

Verses 27-34

Verse Arabic Transliteration English
31:27 وَلَوْ أَنَّمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ مِن شَجَرَةٍ أَقْلَامٌ وَالْبَحْرُ يَمُدُّهُ مِن بَعْدِهِ سَبْعَةُ أَبْحُرٍ مَّا نَفِدَتْ كَلِمَاتُ اللَّهِ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ Wa law annamā fī al-arḍi min shajaratin aqlāmun wal-baḥru yamudduhu min ba‘dihi sab‘atu abḥurin mā nafidat kalimātu ALLAH; inna ALLAH ‘azīzun ḥakīm And if whatever trees upon the earth were pens and the sea , replenished thereafter by seven more seas, the words of GOD would not be exhausted. Indeed, ALLAH is Exalted in Might and Wise.
31:28 مَّا خَلْقُكُمْ وَلَا بَعْثُكُمْ إِلَّا كَنَفْسٍ وَاحِدَةٍ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ سَمِيعٌ بَصِيرٌ Mā khalqukum wa lā ba‘thukum illā ka-nafsin wāḥidah; inna ALLAH samī‘un baṣīr Your creation and your resurrection will not be but as that of a single soul. Indeed, ALLAH is Hearing and Seeing.
31:29 أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّ اللَّهَ يُولِجُ اللَّيْلَ فِي النَّهَارِ وَيُولِجُ النَّهَارَ فِي اللَّيْلِ وَسَخَّرَ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ كُلٌّ يَجْرِي إِلَىٰ أَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّى وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرٌ Alam tara anna ALLAH yūliju al-layla fī an-nahār wa yūliju an-nahāra fī al-layl wa sakhkhara ash-shamsa wal-qamara kullun yajri ilā ajalin musammā wa anna ALLAH bimā ta‘malūna khabīr Do you not see that ALLAH causes the night to enter the day and causes the day to enter the night and has subjected the sun and the moon, each running for a specified term, and that ALLAH is Acquainted with what you do?
31:30 ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ الْحَقُّ وَأَنَّ مَا يَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِهِ الْبَاطِلُ وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ الْعَلِيُّ الْكَبِيرُ Dhālika bi-anna ALLAH huwa al-ḥaqq wa anna mā yad‘ūna min dūnihī al-bāṭil wa anna ALLAH huwa al-‘aliyyu al-kabīr That is because ALLAH is the Truth, and what they call upon other than Him is falsehood, and because GOD is the Most High, the Most Great.
31:31 أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّ الْفُلْكَ تَجْرِي فِي الْبَحْرِ بِنِعْمَتِ اللَّهِ لِيُرِيَكُم مِّنْ آيَاتِهِ ۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِّكُلِّ صَبَّارٍ شَكُورٍ Alam tara anna al-fulka tajrī fī al-baḥri bi-ni‘mati ALLAH li-yuriyakum min āyātih; inna fī dhālika la-āyātin likulli ṣabbārin shakūr Do you not see that ships sail through the sea by the favor of ALLAH that He may show you of His signs? Indeed in that are signs for everyone patient and grateful.
31:32 وَإِذَا غَشِيَهُم مَّوْجٌ كَالظُّلَلِ دَعَوُا اللَّهَ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ الدِّينَ فَلَمَّا نَجَّاهُمْ إِلَى الْبَرِّ فَمِنْهُم مُّقْتَصِدٌ ۚ وَمَا يَجْحَدُ بِآيَاتِنَا إِلَّا كُلُّ خَتَّارٍ كَفُورٍ Wa idhā ghashiyahum mawjun kaẓ-ẓulali da‘aw ALLAH mukhliṣīna lahu ad-dīn fa-lammā najjāhum ilā al-barri fa-minhum muqtaṣid; wa mā yajḥadu bi-āyātinā illā kullu khattārin kafūr And when waves cover them like canopies, they call upon ALLAH, sincere to Him in religion. But when He delivers them to land, some of them are moderate . And none reject Our signs except every treacherous ingrate.
31:33 يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اتَّقُوا رَبَّكُمْ وَاخْشَوْا يَوْمًا لَّا يَجْزِي وَالِدٌ عَن وَلَدِهِ وَلَا مَوْلُودٌ هُوَ جَازٍ عَن وَالِدِهِ شَيْئًا ۚ إِنَّ وَعْدَ اللَّهِ حَقٌّ ۖ فَلَا تَغُرَّنَّكُمُ الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا وَلَا يَغُرَّنَّكُم بِاللَّهِ الْغَرُورُ Yā ayyuhā an-nāsu ittaqū rabbakum wakhshaw yawman lā yajzī wālidun ‘an waladihī wa lā mawlūdun huwa jāzin ‘an wālidihī shay’ā; inna wa‘da ALLAH ḥaqq; falā taghurrannakumu al-ḥayātu ad-dunyā wa lā yaghurrannakum bi-ALLAH al-ghurūr O mankind, fear your Lord and fear a Day when no father will avail his child, nor will a child avail his father at all. Indeed, the promise of GOD is truth, so let not the worldly life deceive you, nor let the deceiver deceive you concerning GOD.
31:34 إِنَّ اللَّهَ عِندَهُ عِلْمُ السَّاعَةِ وَيُنَزِّلُ الْغَيْثَ وَيَعْلَمُ مَا فِي الْأَرْحَامِ ۖ وَمَا تَدْرِي نَفْسٌ مَّاذَا تَكْسِبُ غَدًا وَمَا تَدْرِي نَفْسٌ بِأَيِّ أَرْضٍ تَمُوتُ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ خَبِيرٌ Inna ALLAH ‘indahu ‘ilmu as-sā‘ah wa yunazzilu al-ghaytha wa ya‘lamu mā fī al-arḥām; wa mā tadrī nafsun mādhā taksibu ghadā wa mā tadrī nafsun bi-ayyi arḍin tamūt; inna ALLAH ‘alīmun khabīr Indeed, ALLAH alone has knowledge of the Hour, sends down the rain, and knows what is in the wombs. No soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in which land it will die. Indeed, ALLAH is Knowing and All-Aware.
