Abigail

Gender Feminine
Scripts אֲבִיגַיִל (Ancient Hebrew)

From the Hebrew name אֲבִיגָיִל (‘Avigayil) meaning “my father is joy”, derived from the roots אָב (‘av) meaning “father” and גִּיל (gil) meaning “joy”. In the Old Testament this is the name of Nabal’s wife. After Nabal’s death she became the third wife of King David.

Her story is told in the first book of Samuel.
Abigail, a woman of “good sense and good looks,” was the wife of Nabal of Carmel, a wealthy herdsman of Caleb’s line.
Finding himself in difficulty in the desert, David sent his servants to Nabal to ask him for provisions, reminding him of the protection his people had previously offered his men and herds, but Nabal arrogantly rejected them. David, offended and angry, decided to retaliate by attacking Nabal to kill all the males in his family.
When Abigail was warned of the imminent attack, in secret from her husband and with the help of her servants, she loaded on the donkeys a large number of provisions (bread, wine, rams, toasted wheat, raisins, dried figs) and went to David, throwing herself at his feet and begging him to forgive the offense suffered and to spare his people.
David, moved, desisted from his purpose of revenge and thanked Abigail for having prevented him from carrying out a massacre.
Nabal died ten days later, and David married his widow. (1Samuel 25, 3-42)

Abigail was the mother of David’s second son, named Kileab or even Daniel, who was born while they were in Hebron. ( 1Chronicles 3, 1 & 2Samuel 3, 2-3)
