Intro

1 and 2 Chronicles correspond in Jewish tradition to a single work known as דִּבְרֵי הַיָּמִים — Divrei ha-Yamim, literally “the events of the days” or “annals.” The book belongs to the Ketuvim (Writings), the third section of the Tanakh, and in the Talmudic ordering and many Hebrew Bibles it occupies the concluding position of the canon. Its division into two books, familiar from modern Bibles, derives from the Greek Septuagint tradition.

The work surveys Israel’s history beginning with Adam through extensive genealogies and then concentrates on the house of David, Solomon’s reign, the Jerusalem Temple, and the kings of Judah. Particular emphasis is placed on Temple worship, priests, Levites, and liturgical organization. Its final literary form is generally associated with the post-exilic period, when genealogy, communal continuity, Temple worship, and the restoration of Judah had renewed importance.

The Masoretic Text serves as the primary Hebrew reference for interlinear study. Chronicles displays features associated with Late Biblical Hebrew while also drawing extensively upon earlier biblical traditions, especially Samuel and Kings. Within Judaism it preserves a distinctive theological presentation of Israel’s history centered on Jerusalem, the Temple, and the Davidic dynasty; through later biblical transmission, its accounts of David and Solomon also influenced the religious memory of subsequent Abrahamic traditions.

1 Chronicles 1:1–9:44 (genealogy) – Genealogies from Adam to the tribes of Israel, with particular attention to Judah, Levi, Benjamin, and the descendants of Saul.
1 Chronicles 10:1–14 (narrative) – Death of Saul and the conclusion of his reign.
1 Chronicles 11:1–12:40 (narrative) – David becomes king of Israel; Jerusalem is captured, and his warriors and supporters are recorded.
1 Chronicles 13:1–16:43 (narrative) – Transfer of the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem and organization of liturgical service.
1 Chronicles 17:1–21:30 (narrative) – Promise to the house of David, military campaigns, the census, and identification of the future Temple site.
1 Chronicles 22:1–29:30 (final narrative) – David’s preparations for the Temple, organization of priests and Levites, designation of Solomon, and David’s death.

4:9 וַיְהִי יַעְבֵּץ נִכְבָּד מֵאֶחָיו וְאִמּוֹ קָרְאָה שְׁמוֹ יַעְבֵּץ לֵאמֹר כִּי יָלַדְתִּי בְּעֹצֶב׃	4:9 Va-yehi Yabetz nikhbad me-echav; ve-immo kareah shemo Yabetz lemor: ki yaladti be-otzev	4:9 And Yabetz was more honored than his brothers; and his mother called his name Yabetz, saying, “Because I bore in pain.”	4:9 Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. 6:49 וְאַהֲרֹן וּבָנָיו מַקְטִירִים עַל־מִזְבַּח הָעוֹלָה וְעַל־מִזְבַּח הַקְּטֹרֶת לְכֹל מְלֶאכֶת קֹדֶשׁ הַקֳּדָשִׁים וּלְכַפֵּר עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵל כְּכֹל אֲשֶׁר צִוָּה מֹשֶׁה עֶבֶד הָאֱלֹהִים׃	6:49 Ve-Aharon u-vanav maktirim al-mizbach ha-olah ve-al-mizbach ha-ketoret, le-khol meleket kodesh ha-kodashim u-le-khapper al-Yisrael, ke-khol asher tzivvah Mosheh eved ha-Elohim	6:49 And Aharon and his sons burned offerings on the altar of burnt offering and on the altar of incense, for all the work of the Most Holy and to make atonement for Yisrael, according to all Mosheh servant of GOD commanded.	6:49 Aaron and his sons presented offerings on the altar of burnt offering and the altar of incense. They performed all the work of the Most Holy Place and made atonement for Israel, exactly as Moses, servant of GOD, had commanded.

6:54 וְאֵלֶּה מוֹשְׁבוֹתָם לְטִירוֹתָם בִּגְבוּלָם לִבְנֵי אַהֲרֹן לְמִשְׁפַּחַת הַקְּהָתִי כִּי לָהֶם הָיָה הַגּוֹרָל׃	6:54 Ve-elleh moshvotam le-tirotam bi-gevulam, li-vnei Aharon le-mishpachat ha-Kehati, ki lahem hayah ha-goral	6:54 And these were their dwellings by their encampments within their borders, for the sons of Aharon of the Kehatite family, for theirs was the lot.	6:54 These were the settlements allotted within their boundaries to Aaron’s descendants of the Kohathite family, for the first lot fell to them.
6:55 וַיִּתְּנוּ לָהֶם אֶת־חֶבְרוֹן בְּאֶרֶץ יְהוּדָה וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁיהָ סְבִיבֹתֶיהָ׃	6:55 Va-yittenu lahem et-Chevron be-eretz Yehudah ve-et-migrasheha sevivoteyha	6:55 And they gave them Chevron in the land of Yehudah and its pasturelands around it.	6:55 They were given Hebron in the land of Judah, together with its surrounding pasturelands;
6:56 וְאֶת־שְׂדֵה הָעִיר וְאֶת־חֲצֵרֶיהָ נָתְנוּ לְכָלֵב בֶּן־יְפֻנֶּה׃	6:56 Ve-et-sedeh ha-ir ve-et-chatzeireha natenu le-Khalev ben-Yefunneh	6:56 But the field of the city and its villages they gave to Kalev son of Yefunneh.	6:56 but the fields and villages belonging to the city were given to Caleb son of Jephunneh.
6:57 וְלִבְנֵי אַהֲרֹן נָתְנוּ אֶת־עָרֵי הַמִּקְלָט אֶת־חֶבְרוֹן וְאֶת־לִבְנָה וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁיהָ וְאֶת־יַתִּר וְאֶת־אֶשְׁתְּמֹעַ וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁיהָ׃	6:57 Ve-li-vnei Aharon natenu et-arei ha-miklat, et-Chevron ve-et-Livnah ve-et-migrasheha, ve-et-Yattir ve-et-Eshtemoa ve-et-migrasheha	6:57 And to the sons of Aharon they gave the cities of refuge: Chevron, Livnah with its pasturelands, Yattir and Eshtemoa with its pasturelands.	6:57 Aaron’s descendants received Hebron, a city of refuge, as well as Libnah with its pasturelands, Jattir, and Eshtemoa with its pasturelands;
6:58 וְאֶת־חִילֵז וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁיהָ אֶת־דְּבִיר וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁיהָ׃	6:58 Ve-et-Chilez ve-et-migrasheha, et-Devir ve-et-migrasheha	6:58 Chilez with its pasturelands, Devir with its pasturelands.	6:58 Hilen with its pasturelands, and Debir with its pasturelands;
6:59 וְאֶת־עָשָׁן וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁיהָ וְאֶת־בֵּית שֶׁמֶשׁ וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁיהָ׃	6:59 Ve-et-Ashan ve-et-migrasheha, ve-et-Beit-Shemesh ve-et-migrasheha	6:59 Ashan with its pasturelands, and Beit-Shemesh with its pasturelands.	6:59 Ashan with its pasturelands, and Beth-shemesh with its pasturelands;
6:60 וּמִמַּטֵּה בִנְיָמִן אֶת־גֶּבַע וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁיהָ וְאֶת־עָלֶמֶת וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁיהָ וְאֶת־עֲנָתוֹת וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁיהָ כָּל־עָרֵיהֶם שְׁלֹשׁ־עֶשְׂרֵה עִיר בְּמִשְׁפְּחוֹתֵיהֶם׃	6:60 U-mi-matteh Vinyamin: et-Geva ve-et-migrasheha, ve-et-Alemet ve-et-migrasheha, ve-et-Anatot ve-et-migrasheha; kol-areihem shelosh-esreh ir be-mishpechoteihem	6:60 And from the tribe of Vinyamin: Geva, Alemet and Anatot with their pasturelands. All their cities according to their families were thirteen.	6:60 From Benjamin they received Geba, Alemeth and Anathoth, each with its pasturelands. Their families had thirteen cities in all.
6:61 וְלִבְנֵי קְהָת הַנּוֹתָרִים מִמִּשְׁפַּחַת הַמַּטֶּה מִמַּחֲצִית מַטֵּה חֲצִי מְנַשֶּׁה בַּגּוֹרָל עָרִים עָשֶׂר׃	6:61 Ve-li-vnei Kehat ha-notarim, mi-mishpachat ha-matteh, mi-machatzeit matteh chatzi Menasheh, ba-goral arim aser	6:61 And to the remaining sons of Kehat, from the family of the half-tribe of Menasheh, by lot ten cities.	6:61 The remaining Kohathites received by lot ten cities from the half-tribe of Manasseh.
6:62 וְלִבְנֵי גֵרְשׁוֹם לְמִשְׁפְּחוֹתָם מִמַּטֵּה יִשָּׂשכָר וּמִמַּטֵּה אָשֵׁר וּמִמַּטֵּה נַפְתָּלִי וּמִמַּטֵּה מְנַשֶּׁה בַּבָּשָׁן עָרִים שְׁלֹשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה׃	6:62 Ve-li-vnei Gershom le-mishpechotam, mi-matteh Yissakhar u-mi-matteh Asher u-mi-matteh Naftali u-mi-matteh Menasheh ba-Bashan, arim shelosh esreh	6:62 And to the sons of Gershom by their families, from Yissakhar, Asher, Naftali and Menasheh in Bashan: thirteen cities.	6:62 The Gershonite families received thirteen cities from Issachar, Asher, Naphtali and the part of Manasseh in Bashan.
6:63 לִבְנֵי מְרָרִי לְמִשְׁפְּחוֹתָם מִמַּטֵּה רְאוּבֵן וּמִמַּטֵּה־גָד וּמִמַּטֵּה זְבֻלוּן בַּגּוֹרָל עָרִים שְׁתֵּים עֶשְׂרֵה׃	6:63 Li-vnei Merari le-mishpechotam, mi-matteh Reuven u-mi-matteh Gad u-mi-matteh Zevulun, ba-goral arim sheteim esreh	6:63 To the sons of Merari by their families, from Reuven, Gad and Zevulun, by lot twelve cities.	6:63 The Merarite families received by lot twelve cities from Reuben, Gad and Zebulun.
6:64 וַיִּתְּנוּ בְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵל לַלְוִיִּם אֶת־הֶעָרִים וְאֶת־מִגְרְשֵׁיהֶם׃	6:64 Va-yittenu venei-Yisrael la-Leviyim et-he-arim ve-et-migresheihem	6:64 And the sons of Yisrael gave the Levites the cities and their pasturelands.	6:64 Thus the Israelites gave the Levites these cities and their pasturelands.
6:65 וַיִּתְּנוּ בַגּוֹרָל מִמַּטֵּה בְנֵי־יְהוּדָה וּמִמַּטֵּה בְנֵי־שִׁמְעוֹן וּמִמַּטֵּה בְּנֵי בִנְיָמִן אֵת הֶעָרִים הָאֵלֶּה אֲשֶׁר־יִקְרְאוּ אֶתְהֶם בְּשֵׁמוֹת׃	6:65 Va-yittenu va-goral mi-matteh venei-Yehudah u-mi-matteh venei-Shimon u-mi-matteh benei Vinyamin, et-he-arim ha-elleh asher-yikreu ethem be-shemot	6:65 And they gave by lot from Yehudah, Shimon and Vinyamin these cities that are called by names.	6:65 The cities named above were assigned by lot from the tribes of Judah, Simeon and Benjamin.
6:66 וּמִמִּשְׁפְּחוֹת בְּנֵי קְהָת וַיְהִי עָרֵי גְבוּלָם מִמַּטֵּה אֶפְרָיִם׃	6:66 U-mi-mishpechot benei Kehat, va-yehi arei gevulam mi-matteh Efrayim	6:66 And some families of the sons of Kehat had their border cities from the tribe of Efrayim.	6:66 Some Kohathite families received cities within the territory of Ephraim.
6:67 וַיִּתְּנוּ לָהֶם אֶת־עָרֵי הַמִּקְלָט אֶת־שְׁכֶם וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁיהָ בְּהַר אֶפְרָיִם וְאֶת־גֶּזֶר וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁיהָ׃	6:67 Va-yittenu lahem et-arei ha-miklat, et-Shekhem ve-et-migrasheha be-har Efrayim, ve-et-Gezer ve-et-migrasheha	6:67 And they gave them the city of refuge, Shekhem with its pasturelands in the hill country of Efrayim, and Gezer with its pasturelands.	6:67 They received Shechem, a city of refuge in the hill country of Ephraim, and Gezer, each with its pasturelands;

7:29 וְעַל-יְדֵי בְנֵי-מְנַשֶּׁה, בֵּית-שְׁאָן וּבְנֹתֶיהָ תַּעְנַךְ וּבְנֹתֶיהָ, מְגִדּוֹ וּבְנוֹתֶיהָ, דּוֹר וּבְנוֹתֶיהָ; בְּאֵלֶּה, יָשְׁבוּ, בְּנֵי יוֹסֵף, בֶּן-יִשְׂרָאֵל׃	7:29 Ve-al yedei vnei Menasheh: Beit-She'an u-vnoteha, Ta'nakh u-vnoteha, Megiddo u-vnoteha, Dor u-vnoteha; be-elleh yashvu bnei Yosef ben Yisrael.	7:29 And beside the sons of Manasseh: Beth-shean and its towns, Taanach and its towns, Megiddo and its towns, Dor and its towns; in these dwelt the sons of Joseph, son of Israel.	7:29 Along the territory of Manasseh’s descendants were Beth-shean, Taanach, Megiddo, and Dor, each with its villages. 7:31 וּבְנֵי בְרִיעָה, חֶבֶר וּמַלְכִּיאֵל; הוּא, אֲבִי ברזות בִרְזָיִת׃	7:31 U-vnei Veri'ah: Chever u-Malki'el; hu avi Birzayit.	7:31 And the sons of Beriah: Heber and Malchiel; he was the father of Birzaith.	7:31 The sons of Beriah were Heber and Malchiel; Malchiel was the father of Birzaith.
