Introduction
Sūrat An-Nūr (سورة النور), “The Light,” is the 24th chapter of the Qur’an and contains 64 verses. It is traditionally classified as Medinan and is situated in Juzʾ 18. The surah takes its title from verse 35, where the imagery of divine light becomes one of the most enduring theological passages in the Qur’anic canon. Its major themes include moral accountability, the regulation of sexual misconduct and slander, standards of evidence, the protection of personal honor, household etiquette, modesty, marriage, emancipation, and the ordering of communal life under divine guidance. In a broader Abrahamic perspective, its concern for holiness within domestic and communal life resonates with scriptural traditions that link worship of GOD to justice, purity, and ordered social conduct.
Structure
- 24:1–10 — Legal ordinances on sexual misconduct and sworn testimony
The surah opens with emphatic divine legislation, addressing illicit sexual relations, false accusation, and the special case of accusation between spouses. - 24:11–20 — The false report and the ethics of communal speech
These verses condemn slander, warn against circulating accusations, and call the believing community to moral restraint and charitable judgment. - 24:21–26 — Repentance, purity, and the distinction between corruption and goodness
The surah warns against following satanic impulses, calls to forgiveness, and closes the section by contrasting impure and pure persons. - 24:27–34 — Privacy, modesty, marriage, and social protection
This unit addresses entering houses with permission, lowering the gaze, bodily modesty, marriage, and the prohibition of coercion into prostitution. - 24:35–46 — Divine light, worship, and signs in creation
The theological center of the surah presents the parable of divine light, the life of worship, and signs of GOD in the natural order. - 24:47–57 — Hypocrisy, judgment, and the demands of obedience
These verses expose those who evade divine judgment and distinguish true faith by willing obedience. - 24:58–64 — Domestic etiquette, maturity, and reverence for prophetic authority
The closing section regulates private times within the household, offers concessions for the elderly and vulnerable, and ends with a solemn affirmation of GOD’s all-encompassing knowledge.

And those are the defiantly disobedient, |
| 24:5 | إِلَّا الَّذِينَ تَابُوا مِن بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ وَأَصْلَحُوا ۚ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ | Illā alladhīna tābū min ba‘di dhālika wa aṣaḥū; fa-inna ALLAH ghafūrun raḥīm | Except for those who repent thereafter and reform, for indeed, ALLAH is Forgiving and Merciful. |
| 24:6 | وَالَّذِينَ يَرْمُونَ أَزْوَاجَهُمْ وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُمْ شُهَدَاءُ إِلَّا أَنفُسُهُمْ فَشَهَادَةُ أَحَدِهِمْ أَرْبَعُ شَهَادَاتٍ بِاللَّهِ إِنَّهُ لَمِنَ الصَّادِقِينَ | Walladhīna yarmūna azwājahum wa lam yakun lahum shuhadā’u illā anfusuhum fa-shahādatu aḥadihim arba‘u shahādātin bi-ALLAH innahu lamina aṣ-ṣādiqīn | And those who accuse their wives and have no witnesses except themselves—then the testimony of one of them four testimonies by ALLAH that indeed, he is of the truthful. |

| 24:13 | لَّوْلَا جَاءُوا عَلَيْهِ بِأَرْبَعَةِ شُهَدَاءَ ۚ فَإِذْ لَمْ يَأْتُوا بِالشُّهَدَاءِ فَأُولَٰئِكَ عِندَ اللَّهِ هُمُ الْكَاذِبُونَ | Lawlā jā’ū ‘alayhi bi-arba‘ati shuhadā’; fa-idh lam ya’tū bish-shuhadā’i fa-ulā’ika ‘inda ALLAH humu al-kādhibūn | Why did they not produce for it four witnesses? And when they do not produce the witnesses, then it is they, in the sight of ALLAH, who are the liars. |

| 24:27 | يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَدْخُلُوا بُيُوتًا غَيْرَ بُيُوتِكُمْ حَتَّىٰ تَسْتَأْنِسُوا وَتُسَلِّمُوا عَلَىٰ أَهْلِهَا ۚ ذَٰلِكُمْ خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ | Yā ayyuhā alladhīna āmanū lā tadkhulū buyūtan ghayra buyūtikum ḥattā tasta’nisū wa tusallimū ‘alā ahlihā; dhālikum khayrun lakum la‘allakum tadhakkarūn | O you who have believed, do not enter houses other than your own houses until you seek permission and greet their inhabitants. That is better for you; perhaps you will be reminded. |
| 24:28 | فَإِن لَّمْ تَجِدُوا فِيهَا أَحَدًا فَلَا تَدْخُلُوهَا حَتَّىٰ يُؤْذَنَ لَكُمْ ۖ وَإِن قِيلَ لَكُمُ ارْجِعُوا فَارْجِعُوا ۖ هُوَ أَزْكَىٰ لَكُمْ ۚ وَاللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ عَلِيمٌ | Fa in lam tajidū fīhā aḥadan falā tadkhulūhā ḥattā yu’dhana lakum; wa in qīla lakum irji‘ū farji‘ū; huwa azkā lakum; wallāhu bimā ta‘malūna ‘alīm | And if you do not find anyone therein, do not enter them until permission has been given you. And if it is said to you, “Go back,” then go back; it is purer for you. And ALLAH is Knowing of what you do. |
| 24:29 | لَّيْسَ عَلَيْكُمْ جُنَاحٌ أَن تَدْخُلُوا بُيُوتًا غَيْرَ مَسْكُونَةٍ فِيهَا مَتَاعٌ لَّكُمْ ۚ وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ مَا تُبْدُونَ وَمَا تَكْتُمُونَ | Laysa ‘alaykum junāḥun an tadkhulū buyūtan ghayra maskūnatin fīhā matā‘un lakum; wallāhu ya‘lamu mā tubdūna wa mā taktumūn | There is no blame upon you for entering houses not inhabited in which there is convenience for you. And ALLAH knows what you reveal and what you conceal. |
| 24:30 | قُل لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَغُضُّوا مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِمْ وَيَحْفَظُوا فُرُوجَهُمْ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ أَزْكَىٰ لَهُمْ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ خَبِيرٌ بِمَا يَصْنَعُونَ | Qul lil-mu’minīna yaghuḍḍū min abṣārihim wa yaḥfaẓū furūjahum; dhālika azkā lahum; innal-lāha khabīrun bimā yaṣna‘ūn | Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, ALLAH is Acquainted with what they do. |
| 24:31 | وَقُل لِّلْمُؤْمِنَاتِ يَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِنَّ وَيَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوجَهُنَّ وَلَا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا ۖ وَلْيَضْرِبْنَ بِخُمُرِهِنَّ عَلَىٰ جُيُوبِهِنَّ وَلَا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا لِبُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ آبَائِهِنَّ أَوْ آبَاءِ بُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ أَبْنَائِهِنَّ أَوْ أَبْنَاءِ بُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ إِخْوَانِهِنَّ أَوْ بَنِي إِخْوَانِهِنَّ أَوْ بَنِي أَخَوَاتِهِنَّ أَوْ نِسَائِهِنَّ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُهُنَّ أَوِ التَّابِعِينَ غَيْرِ أُولِي الْإِرْبَةِ مِنَ الرِّجَالِ أَوِ الطِّفْلِ الَّذِينَ لَمْ يَظْهَرُوا عَلَىٰ عَوْرَاتِ النِّسَاءِ ۖ وَلَا يَضْرِبْنَ بِأَرْجُلِهِنَّ لِيُعْلَمَ مَا يُخْفِينَ مِن زِينَتِهِنَّ ۚ وَتُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا أَيُّهَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ | Wa qul lil-mu’mināti yaghuḍḍna min abṣārihinna wa yaḥfaẓna furūjahunna wa lā yubdīna zīnatahunna illā mā ẓahara minhā; wal-yaḍribna bikhumurihinna ‘alā juyūbihinna wa lā yubdīna zīnatahunna illā li-bu‘ūlatihinna aw ābā’ihinna aw ābā’i bu‘ūlatihinna aw abnā’ihinna aw abnā’i bu‘ūlatihinna aw ikh’wānihinna aw banī ikh’wānihinna aw banī akhawātihinna aw nisā’ihinna aw mā malakat aymānuhunna aw at-tābi‘īna ghayri ulī al-irbati mina ar-rijāli aw aṭ-ṭifli alladhīna lam yaẓharū ‘alā ‘awrāti an-nisā’; wa lā yaḍribna bi-arjulihinna li-yu‘lama mā yukhfīna min zīnatihinna; wa tūbū ilā ALLAH jamī‘an ayyuhā al-mu’minūna la‘allakum tufliḥūn | And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except what ordinarily appears thereof, and to draw their coverings over their bosoms and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons, their sisters’ sons, their women, those whom their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to ALLAH in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed. |
| 24:32 | وَأَنكِحُوا الْأَيَامَىٰ مِنكُمْ وَالصَّالِحِينَ مِنْ عِبَادِكُمْ وَإِمَائِكُمْ ۚ إِن يَكُونُوا فُقَرَاءَ يُغْنِهِمُ اللَّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ وَاسِعٌ عَلِيمٌ | Wa ankiḥū al-ayāmā minkum waṣ-ṣāliḥīna min ‘ibādikum wa imā’ikum; in yakūnū fuqarā’a yughnihimu ALLAH min faḍlih; wa ALLAH wāsi‘un ‘alīm | And marry the unmarried among you and the righteous among your male slaves and female slaves. If they should be poor, ALLAH will enrich them from His bounty. And ALLAH is All-Encompassing and Knowing. |

And those who seek a contract from among whom your right hands possess—then make a contract with them if you know there is within them goodness and give them from the wealth of ALLAH which He has given you. And do not compel your slave girls to prostitution, if they desire chastity, to seek the temporary interests of worldly life. And if someone should compel them, then indeed, ALLAH is , after their compulsion, Forgiving and Merciful. |
| 24:34 | وَلَقَدْ أَنزَلْنَا إِلَيْكُمْ آيَاتٍ مُّبَيِّنَاتٍ وَمَثَلًا مِّنَ الَّذِينَ خَلَوْا مِن قَبْلِكُمْ وَمَوْعِظَةً لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ | Wa laqad anzalnā ilaykum āyātin mubayyinātin wa mathalan mina alladhīna khalaw min qablikum wa maw‘iẓatan lil-muttaqīn | And We have certainly sent down to you verses of clear evidence and an example from those who passed on before you and an admonition for those who fear ALLAH. |
| 24:35 | اللَّهُ نُورُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ ۚ مَثَلُ نُورِهِ كَمِشْكَاةٍ فِيهَا مِصْبَاحٌ ۖ الْمِصْبَاحُ فِي زُجَاجَةٍ ۖ الزُّجَاجَةُ كَأَنَّهَا كَوْكَبٌ دُرِّيٌّ يُوقَدُ مِن شَجَرَةٍ مُّبَارَكَةٍ زَيْتُونَةٍ لَّا شَرْقِيَّةٍ وَلَا غَرْبِيَّةٍ يَكَادُ زَيْتُهَا يُضِيءُ وَلَوْ لَمْ تَمْسَسْهُ نَارٌ ۚ نُّورٌ عَلَىٰ نُورٍ ۗ يَهْدِي اللَّهُ لِنُورِهِ مَن يَشَاءُ ۚ وَيَضْرِبُ اللَّهُ الْأَمْثَالَ لِلنَّاسِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمٌ | ALLAHu nūru as-samāwāti wal-arḍ; mathalu nūrihī ka-mishkātin fīhā miṣbāḥ; al-miṣbāḥu fī zujājah; az-zujājatu ka-annahā kawkabun durrīyun yūqadu min shajaratin mubārakatin zaytūnat lā sharqiyyatin wa lā gharbiyyah; yakādu zaytuhā yuḍī’u wa law lam tamsashu nār; nūrun ‘alā nūr; yahdī ALLAH li-nūrihī man yashā’; wa yaḍribu ALLAH al-amthāla lin-nās; wa ALLAH bi-kulli shay’in ‘alīm | ALLAH is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp; the lamp is within glass; the glass as if it were a shining star lit from a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. ALLAH guides to His light whom He wills. And ALLAH presents examples for the people, and ALLAH is Knowing of all things. |
| 24:36 | فِي بُيُوتٍ أَذِنَ اللَّهُ أَن تُرْفَعَ وَيُذْكَرَ فِيهَا اسْمُهُ ۚ يُسَبِّحُ لَهُ فِيهَا بِالْغُدُوِّ وَالْآصَالِ | Fī buyūtin adhina ALLAHu an turfa‘a wa yudhkara fīhā ismuh; yusabbiḥu lahu fīhā bil-ghudūwi wal-āṣāl | in houses which ALLAH has ordered to be raised and that His name be mentioned therein; exalting Him within them in the morning and the evenings. |
| 24:37 | رِجَالٌ لَّا تُلْهِيهِمْ تِجَارَةٌ وَلَا بَيْعٌ عَن ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ وَإِقَامِ الصَّلَاةِ وَإِيتَاءِ الزَّكَاةِ ۙ يَخَافُونَ يَوْمًا تَتَقَلَّبُ فِيهِ الْقُلُوبُ وَالْأَبْصَارُ | Rijālun lā tulhīhim tijāratun wa lā bay‘un ‘an dhikri ALLAH wa iqāmi aṣ-ṣalāh wa ītā’i az-zakāh; yakhāfūna yawman tataqallabu fīhi al-qulūbu wal-abṣār | men whom neither commerce nor sale distracts from the remembrance of ALLAH and performance of prayer and giving of zakah. They fear a Day in which the hearts and eyes will turn about— |
| 24:38 | لِيَجْزِيَهُمُ اللَّهُ أَحْسَنَ مَا عَمِلُوا وَيَزِيدَهُم مِّن فَضْلِهِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ يَرْزُقُ مَن يَشَاءُ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ | Li-yajziyahumu ALLAHu aḥsana mā ‘amilū wa yazīdahum min faḍlih; wa ALLAH yarzuqu man yashā’u bighayri ḥisāb | That ALLAH may reward them according to the best of what they did and increase them from His bounty. And ALLAH gives provision to whom He wills without account. |
| 24:39 | وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا أَعْمَالُهُمْ كَسَرَابٍ بِقِيعَةٍ يَحْسَبُهُ الظَّمْآنُ مَاءً حَتَّىٰ إِذَا جَاءَهُ لَمْ يَجِدْهُ شَيْئًا وَوَجَدَ اللَّهَ عِندَهُ فَوَفَّاهُ حِسَابَهُ ۗ وَاللَّهُ سَرِيعُ الْحِسَابِ | Walladhīna kafarū a‘māluhum ka-sarābin bi-qī‘atin yaḥsabuhu aẓ-ẓam’ānu mā’an ḥattā idhā jā’ahu lam yajid’hu shay’an wa wajada ALLAH ‘indahu fa-waffāhu ḥisābah; wa ALLAH sarī‘u al-ḥisāb | But those who disbelieved—their deeds are like a mirage in a lowland which a thirsty one thinks is water until, when he comes to it, he finds it is nothing but finds ALLAH before him, and He will pay him in full his due; and ALLAH is swift in account. |
Verses 40-45
| Verse | Arabic | Transliteration | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24:40 | أَوْ كَظُلُمَاتٍ فِي بَحْرٍ لُّجِّيٍّ يَغْشَاهُ مَوْجٌ مِّن فَوْقِهِ مَوْجٌ مِّن فَوْقِهِ سَحَابٌ ۚ ظُلُمَاتٌ بَعْضُهَا فَوْقَ بَعْضٍ إِذَا أَخْرَجَ يَدَهُ لَمْ يَكَدْ يَرَاهَا ۗ وَمَن لَّمْ يَجْعَلِ اللَّهُ لَهُ نُورًا فَمَا لَهُ مِن نُّورٍ | Aw kaẓulumātin fī baḥrin lujjiyyin yaghshāhu mawjun min fawqihī mawjun min fawqihī saḥāb; ẓulumātun ba‘ḍuhā fawqa ba‘ḍ; idhā akhraja yadahu lam yakad yarāhā; wa man lam yaj‘ali ALLAH lahu nūran famā lahu min nūr | Or like darknesses within an unfathomable sea which is covered by waves, upon which are waves, over which are clouds—darknesses, some of them upon others. When one puts out his hand, he can hardly see it. And he to whom ALLAH has not granted light—for him there is no light. |
| 24:41 | أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّ اللَّهَ يُسَبِّحُ لَهُ مَن فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَالطَّيْرُ صَافَّاتٍ ۖ كُلٌّ قَدْ عَلِمَ صَلَاتَهُ وَتَسْبِيحَهُ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ بِمَا يَفْعَلُونَ | Alam tara anna ALLAH yusabbiḥu lahu man fis-samāwāti wal-arḍi waṭ-ṭayru ṣāffāt; kullun qad ‘alima ṣalātahu wa tasbīḥah; wa ALLAH ‘alīmun bimā yaf‘alūn | Do you not see that ALLAH is exalted by whoever is within the heavens and the earth and by the birds with wings spread? Each has known his means of prayer and exalting Him, and ALLAH is Knowing of what they do. |
| 24:42 | وَلِلَّهِ مُلْكُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ ۖ وَإِلَى اللَّهِ الْمَصِيرُ | Wa li-ALLAH mulku as-samāwāti wal-arḍ; wa ilā ALLAH al-maṣīr | And to ALLAH belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and to ALLAH is the destination. |
| 24:43 | أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّ اللَّهَ يُزْجِي سَحَابًا ثُمَّ يُؤَلِّفُ بَيْنَهُ ثُمَّ يَجْعَلُهُ رُكَامًا | Alam tara anna ALLAH yuzjī saḥāban thumma yu’allifu baynahu thumma yaj‘aluhu rukāman | Do you not see that ALLAH drives clouds, then brings them together, then makes them into a mass… |
| 24:44 | يُقَلِّبُ اللَّهُ اللَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ ۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَعِبْرَةً لِّأُولِي الْأَبْصَارِ | Yuqallibu ALLAH al-layla wan-nahār; inna fī dhālika la‘ibratan li-ulī al-abṣār | ALLAH alternates the night and the day. Indeed in that is a lesson for those who have vision. |
| 24:45 | وَاللَّهُ خَلَقَ كُلَّ دَابَّةٍ مِّن مَّاءٍ ۖ فَمِنْهُم مَّن يَمْشِي عَلَىٰ بَطْنِهِ وَمِنْهُم مَّن يَمْشِي عَلَىٰ رِجْلَيْنِ وَمِنْهُم مَّن يَمْشِي عَلَىٰ أَرْبَعٍ ۚ يَخْلُقُ اللَّهُ مَا يَشَاءُ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ | Wa ALLAH khalaqa kulla dābbatin min mā’; fa minhum man yamshī ‘alā baṭnihī wa minhum man yamshī ‘alā rijlayn wa minhum man yamshī ‘alā arba‘; yakhluqu ALLAH mā yashā’; inna ALLAH ‘alā kulli shay’in qadīr | ALLAH has created every living creature from water. And among them are those that move on their bellies, and among them are those that walk on two legs, and among them are those that walk on four. ALLAH creates what He wills. Indeed, ALLAH is over all things competent. |
Verses 46-51

|---|---|---|---|
| 24:46 | لَّقَدْ أَنزَلْنَا آيَاتٍ مُّبَيِّنَاتٍ ۚ وَاللَّهُ يَهْدِي مَن يَشَاءُ إِلَىٰ صِرَاطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ | Laqad anzalnā āyātin mubayyināt; wa ALLAH yahdī man yashā’u ilā ṣirāṭin mustaqīm | We have certainly sent down distinct verses. And ALLAH guides whom He wills to a straight path. |
| 24:47 | وَيَقُولُونَ آمَنَّا بِاللَّهِ وَبِالرَّسُولِ وَأَطَعْنَا ثُمَّ يَتَوَلَّىٰ فَرِيقٌ مِّنْهُم مِّن بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ ۚ وَمَا أُولَٰئِكَ بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ | Wa yaqūlūna āmannā bi-ALLAHI wa bir-rasūli wa aṭa‘nā thumma yatawallā farīqum minhum mim ba‘di dhālik; wa mā ulā’ika bil-mu’minīn | But they say, “We have believed in ALLAH and in the Messenger, and we obey”; then a party of them turns away after that. And those are not believers. |
| 24:48 | وَإِذَا دُعُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ لِيَحْكُمَ بَيْنَهُمْ إِذَا فَرِيقٌ مِّنْهُم مُّعْرِضُونَ | Wa idhā du‘ū ilā ALLAHI wa rasūlihī li-yaḥkuma baynahum idhā farīqum minhum mu‘riḍūn | And when they are called to ALLAH and His Messenger to judge between them, at once a party of them turns aside . |
| 24:49 | وَإِن يَكُن لَّهُمُ الْحَقُّ يَأْتُوا إِلَيْهِ مُذْعِنِينَ | Wa in yakul lahumu al-ḥaqqu ya’tū ilayhi mudh‘inīn | But if the right is theirs, they come to him in prompt obedience. |
| 24:50 | أَفِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ أَمِ ارْتَابُوا أَمْ يَخَافُونَ أَن يَحِيفَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ وَرَسُولُهُ ۚ بَلْ أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الظَّالِمُونَ | Afī qulūbihim maraḍun ami irtābū am yakhāfūna an yaḥīfa ALLAHU ‘alayhim wa rasūluh; bal ulā’ika humu aẓ-ẓālimūn | Is there disease in their hearts? Or have they doubted? Or do they fear that ALLAH will be unjust toward them and His Messenger? Rather, it is they who are the wrongdoers. |
| 24:51 | إِنَّمَا كَانَ قَوْلَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِذَا دُعُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ لِيَحْكُمَ بَيْنَهُمْ أَن يَقُولُوا سَمِعْنَا وَأَطَعْنَا ۚ وَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ | Innamā kāna qawla al-mu’minīna idhā du‘ū ilā ALLAHI wa rasūlihī li-yaḥkuma baynahum an yaqūlū sami‘nā wa aṭa‘nā; wa ulā’ika humu al-mufliḥūn | The only statement of the believers when they are called to ALLAH and His Messenger to judge between them is that they say, “We hear and we obey.” And those are the successful. |
Verses 52-59
| Verse | Arabic | Transliteration | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24:52 | وَمَن يُطِعِ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَيَخْشَ اللَّهَ وَيَتَّقْهِ فَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْفَائِزُونَ | Wa man yuṭi‘i ALLAH wa rasūlahu wa yakhsha ALLAH wa yattaqhi fa-ulā’ika humu al-fā’izūn | And whoever obeys ALLAH and His Messenger and fears ALLAH and is conscious of Him—it is those who are the attainers. |
| 24:53 | وَأَقْسَمُوا بِاللَّهِ جَهْدَ أَيْمَانِهِمْ لَئِنْ أَمَرْتَهُمْ لَيَخْرُجُنَّ ۖ قُل لَّا تُقْسِمُوا ۖ طَاعَةٌ مَّعْرُوفَةٌ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ خَبِيرٌ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ | Wa aqsamū bi-ALLAH jahda aymānihim la’in amartahum layakhrujunn; qul lā tuqsimū; ṭā‘atun ma‘rūfah; inna ALLAH khabīrun bimā ta‘malūn | And they swear by ALLAH their strongest oaths that if you ordered them, they would go forth. Say, “Do not swear. obedience is known. Indeed, ALLAH is Acquainted with what you do.” |
| 24:54 | قُلْ أَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُوا الرَّسُولَ ۖ فَإِن تَوَلَّوْا فَإِنَّمَا عَلَيْهِ مَا حُمِّلَ وَعَلَيْكُم مَّا حُمِّلْتُمْ ۖ وَإِن تُطِيعُوهُ تَهْتَدُوا ۚ وَمَا عَلَى الرَّسُولِ إِلَّا الْبَلَاغُ الْمُبِينُ | Qul aṭī‘ū ALLAH wa aṭī‘ū ar-rasūl; fa-in tawallaw fa-innamā ‘alayhi mā ḥummila wa ‘alaykum mā ḥummiltum; wa in tuṭī‘ūhu tahtadū; wa mā ‘alā ar-rasūli illā al-balāgh al-mubīn | Say, “Obey ALLAH and obey the Messenger; but if you turn away—then upon him is only that with which he has been charged, and upon you is that with which you have been charged. And if you obey him, you will be guided. And there is not upon the Messenger except the clear notification.” |
| 24:55 | وَعَدَ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنكُمْ وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ لَيَسْتَخْلِفَنَّهُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ | Wa‘ada ALLAH alladhīna āmanū minkum wa ‘amilū aṣ-ṣāliḥāt layastakhlifannahum fī al-arḍ | ALLAH has promised those who have believed among you and done righteous deeds that He will surely grant them succession upon the earth… |
| 24:56 | وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ وَأَطِيعُوا الرَّسُولَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ | Wa aqīmū aṣ-ṣalāh wa ātū az-zakāh wa aṭī‘ū ar-rasūl la‘allakum turḥamūn | And establish prayer and give zakah and obey the Messenger—that you may receive mercy. |
| 24:57 | لَا تَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا مُعْجِزِينَ فِي الْأَرْضِ ۚ وَمَأْوَاهُمُ النَّارُ ۖ وَلَبِئْسَ الْمَصِيرُ | Lā taḥsabanna alladhīna kafarū mu‘jizīna fī al-arḍ; wa ma’wāhum an-nār; wa labi’sa al-maṣīr | Never think that the disbelievers are causing failure upon earth. Their refuge will be the Fire—and wretched is the destination. |
| 24:58 | يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لِيَسْتَأْذِنكُمُ الَّذِينَ مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُكُمْ | Yā ayyuhā alladhīna āmanū liyasta’dhinkumu alladhīna malakat aymānukum | O you who have believed, let those whom your right hands possess and those who have not reached puberty among you ask permission of you at three times… |
| 24:59 | وَإِذَا بَلَغَ الْأَطْفَالُ مِنكُمُ الْحُلُمَ فَلْيَسْتَأْذِنُوا | Wa idhā balagha al-aṭfālu minkumu al-ḥuluma falyasta’dhinū | And when the children among you reach puberty, let them ask permission as those before them have done. |
Verses 60-64
| Verse | Arabic | Transliteration | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24:60 | وَالْقَوَاعِدُ مِنَ النِّسَاءِ اللَّاتِي لَا يَرْجُونَ نِكَاحًا | Wal-qawā‘idu mina an-nisā’i allātī lā yarjūna nikāḥan | And women of post-menstrual age who have no desire for marriage—there is no blame upon them for putting aside their outer garments without displaying adornment; but to modestly refrain is better for them. And ALLAH is Hearing and Knowing. |
| 24:61 | لَيْسَ عَلَى الْأَعْمَىٰ حَرَجٌ وَلَا عَلَى الْأَعْرَجِ حَرَجٌ وَلَا عَلَى الْمَرِيضِ حَرَجٌ | Laysa ‘alā al-a‘mā ḥarajun wa lā ‘alā al-a‘raji ḥarajun wa lā ‘alā al-marīḍi ḥaraj | There is not upon the blind any blame, nor upon the lame any blame, nor upon the ill any blame… Nor upon yourselves when you eat from your houses or the houses of your fathers… There is no blame upon you whether you eat together or separately. But when you enter houses, greet one another with a greeting from ALLAH, blessed and good. |
| 24:62 | إِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا بِاللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ | Innamā al-mu’minūna alladhīna āmanū bi-ALLAH wa rasūlih | The believers are only those who believe in ALLAH and His Messenger and, when they are with him on a matter requiring collective action, they do not depart until they have asked his permission. |
| 24:63 | لَا تَجْعَلُوا دُعَاءَ الرَّسُولِ بَيْنَكُمْ | Lā taj‘alū du‘ā’a ar-rasūli baynakum | Do not make the calling of the Messenger among you as the call of one of you to another. ALLAH knows those of you who slip away, concealed by others. |
| 24:64 | أَلَا إِنَّ لِلَّهِ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ | Alā inna li-ALLAH mā fī as-samāwāti wal-arḍ | Unquestionably, to ALLAH belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. He knows that upon which you stand, and the Day you are returned to Him, He will inform them of what they have done. And ALLAH is Knowing of all things. |
