Intro
Those who cannot love animals will hardly know how to love themselves, and without this first step, love for others, for “neighbor” becomes an insurmountable challenge. Animals, especially pets, with whom we have a familial relationship offer us a unique opportunity to reflect on our connection with GOD as well.
They depend on us for their survival, just as we depend on the Creator for our existence. However, in the end, we need them too: they keep us company, make us feel special, and often seem to be the only ones who understand our feelings, even though they do not speak our language. These are just a few examples of how important their presence is to us. Similarly, but in a profoundly different way, GOD is absolutely self-sufficient (aseity), needing nothing to exist. Yet, as the prophet Isaiah says, “All those who bear my Name, whom I have created for my glory, whom I have formed and also made ” (Isaiah 43:7), we were created for His pleasure and are precious in His eyes.
This relationship, based on care, love and mutual respect, not only teaches us how to care for the vulnerable, but also helps us understand the complex nature of divine love. Through animals, we learn the value of unconditional love, but we also discover that love brings with it the need to guide, to correct, to forgive. It is in these everyday dynamics that we can find a reflection of how GOD relates to humanity, and how we, in turn, can approach Him.
Learning to Love Animals Helps Us to Love Ourselves and Others
Pets are silent teachers who teach us the value of unconditional love, a tangible reflection of divine love. By caring for a dog, cat or other animal, we learn to give affection without expecting anything in return, just as the Creator loves His creatures. This daily relationship helps us discover hidden parts of our soul: patience, tenderness and the ability to care for another living being. This awareness not only brings us closer to ourselves, but creates the basis for extending genuine love to others. In a virtuous cycle, the love we devote to our animals transforms us, making us more compassionate and capable of deep relationships with those around us.
Parallels with Our Relationship to GOD
Our relationship with pets can thus prove to be a surprising key to understanding the relationship between humanity and GOD. When our dog destroys a couch or our cat knocks over a vase, our initial reaction may be one of frustration, but it is precisely in these moments that the depth of our unconditional love, a reflection of GOD’s infinite patience, is revealed.
Pets depend completely on us for their survival and well-being, just as we depend on GOD. Although we set rules for their good, they often follow their own instincts, ignoring our directives. This behavior reflects our own relationship with the Divine: GOD provides us with every necessary resource and guidance, while respecting our free will, even when our choices lead to negative consequences.
The key to this metaphor deepens when we consider the concept of respect and limits. Think of a dog to whom you have given special privileges: a comfortable kennel at home, delicious meals, special attention. Would you accept that this same animal, slowly, elevated above the others in your house, by your grace, begins to ignore your commands, eating freely at your table or sleeping in your bed? As loving masters, we set boundaries that must be respected, just as GOD demands respect as our Heavenly Father. This reverential fear is not based on terror, but on love and understanding that without a fear component, teachings are often forgotten or ignored.
This dynamic is particularly reflected in the concept of human pride. When we find ourselves in positions of power-whether it is leading a nation or in any other role of authority-well the simple minded think, “Blessed are they!” but in fact they are not. “Blessed are they,” to whom the more is given the more is required, and the risk of overdoing it is greater. But just as we would not tolerate arrogance on the part of an animal we have elevated, so the Creator intervenes when mankind becomes haughty. These are the happenings that can explain GOD’s fairness, and they tell us stories of resurrection:
“Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake: some to eternal life, and some to shame and to everlasting infamy.”
Book of Daniel (12:2)
This may explain the cycles of life, death and resurrection on earth, and represents the continuous process of spiritual evolution: those who improve rise, those who get worse regress. As Jesus himself teaches us:
“Marvel not at this, for the hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come forth: as many as have done good for a resurrection of life, and as many as have done evil for a resurrection of condemnation.”
(John 5:28-29)
These words remind us that resurrection is not just a future event, but an ongoing process of spiritual transformation on Earth.
Our animal friends teach us this fundamental lesson of humility and growth: true elevation lies not in rising above established boundaries, but in lovingly and wisely respecting the boundaries we have been given for our own good.
Conclusion: Conditionally unconditional love
Conclusion: Conditionally unconditional love
The “conditionally unconditional” love we experience with our pets deeply illuminates the nature of divine love. When a dog greets us festively or a cat spontaneously seeks our contact, we experience a joy that transcends mere affective exchange — a reflection of the joy of the Divine when we, His creatures, turn to Him with gratitude and spontaneous love.
As janitors, we invest energy and resources in the well-being of our animals, hoping to receive their affection and loyalty in return. This desire for reciprocity surprisingly mirrors the dynamics of divine love: the Creator, while loving us unconditionally, desires our loving response not out of selfish need, but because He knows that in this reciprocity lies our highest fulfillment.
In this perspective, we understand how genuine love is always oriented toward the good of the other. Just as we do not force our animals to love us but create the conditions for them to do so freely, so the Divine offers us endless opportunities to respond to His love, finding in our free choice the deepest value of relationship.
