[…] I passed through the city centre of Eskisehir, which in Turkish literally means “old town”, and in fact although the foundation by the Indo-European population of the Kingdom of Phrygia dates back to about a millennium before Christ, it is estimated that the original settlement is more than four thousand years old. But for me the most surprising thing even more surprising than its past was the present of that city which, after Istanbul only, turned out to be the most characteristic and multi-ethnic place that I travelled on Turkish soil. The most unusual thing about Eskişehir I found it on the Porsuk River that runs through the city centre, the gondolas that numerous ploughed its waters. The “Venice of Turkey”, was the epithet that the picturesque city had earned giving it a feeling of vivacity that I have not found anywhere else in Anatolia, no wonder that many ancient travelers and geographers of the past described the city as one of the most beautiful in Anatolia.
