Introduction

‘An-Nisa’ (Arabic: ٱلنساء, An-Nisā meaning: “the women”) is the fourth chapter (sūrah) of the Qur’ān, with 176 verses (āyāt). The title is derived from the numerous references to women throughout the chapter, including verse 34 and verses 127-130.
This Medina sura aims to protect the nascent Muslim community by outlining acceptable behavior for Muslims (believers “submissive” to the Will of GOD) and shows the role of the Qur’an as an authoritative legal source capable of shaping the community. The sura aims to eradicate the previous practices of pagan Arab communities that are no longer considered moral in Muslim society. For example, the section of this sura on treating young orphaned women fairly (4:2-4) addresses the pre-Islamic Arab practice of marrying orphaned girls to take their property.

Basmala بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem In the Name of GOD, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
4:1 يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اتَّقُوا رَبَّكُمُ الَّذِي خَلَقَكُمْ مِنْ نَفْسٍ وَاحِدَةٍ وَخَلَقَ مِنْهَا زَوْجَهَا وَبَثَّ مِنْهُمَا رِجَالًا كَثِيرًا وَنِسَاءً ۚ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ الَّذِي تَسَاءَلُونَ بِهِ وَالْأَرْحَامَ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ عَلَيْكُمْ رَقِيبًا Yaaa aiyuhan naasut taqoo Rabbakumul lazee khalaqakum min nafsinw waahidatinw wa khalaqa minhaa zawjahaa wa bas sa minhumaa rijaalan kaseeranw wa nisaaa’aa; wattaqul laahallazee tasaaa ‘aloona bihee wal arhaam; innal laaha kaana ‘alaikum Raqeeba O people, keep your duty to your Lord, Who created you from a single being and created its mate of the same (kind), and spread from these two many men and women. And keep your duty to ALLAH, by Whom you demand one of another (your rights), and (to) the ties of relationship. Surely ALLAH is ever a Watcher over you.
4:2 وَآتُوا الْيَتَامَىٰ أَمْوَالَهُمْ ۖ وَلَا تَتَبَدَّلُوا الْخَبِيثَ بِالطَّيِّبِ ۖ وَلَا تَأْكُلُوا أَمْوَالَهُمْ إِلَىٰ أَمْوَالِكُمْ ۚ إِنَّهُ كَانَ حُوبًا كَبِيرًا Wa aatul yataamaaa amwaalahum wa laa tatabad dalul khabeesa bittaiyibi wa laa ta’kulooo amwaalahum ilaaa amwaalikum; innahoo kaana hooban kabeeraa And give to the orphans their property, and substitute not worthless (things) for (their) good (ones), and devour not their property (adding) to your own property. This is surely a great sin.
4:3 وَإِنْ خِفْتُمْ أَلَّا تُقْسِطُوا فِي الْيَتَامَىٰ فَانْكِحُوا مَا طَابَ لَكُمْ مِنَ النِّسَاءِ مَثْنَىٰ وَثُلَاثَ وَرُبَاعَ ۖ فَإِنْ خِفْتُمْ أَلَّا تَعْدِلُوا فَوَاحِدَةً أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُكُمْ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ أَدْنَىٰ أَلَّا تَعُولُوا Wa in khiftum allaa tuqsitoo fil yataamaa fankihoo maa taaba lakum minan nisaaa’i masnaa wa sulaasa wa rubaa’a fa’in khiftum allaa ta’diloo fawaahidatan aw maa malakat aimaanukum; zaalika adnaaa allaa ta’ooloo And if you fear that you cannot do justice to orphans, marry such women as seem good to you, two, or three, or four; but if you fear that you will not do justice, then (marry) only one or that which your right hands possess. This is more proper that you may not do injustice.
Wa aatun nisaaa’a sadu qaatihinna nihlah; fa in tibna lakum ‘an shai’im minhu nafsan fakuloohu hanee’am mareee’aa And give women their dowries as a free gift. But if they of themselves be pleased to give you a portion thereof, consume it with enjoyment and pleasure.
4:5 وَلَا تُؤْتُوا السُّفَهَاءَ أَمْوَالَكُمُ الَّتِي جَعَلَ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ قِيَامًا وَارْزُقُوهُمْ فِيهَا وَاكْسُوهُمْ وَقُولُوا لَهُمْ قَوْلًا مَعْرُوفًا Wa laa tu’tus sufahaaa’a amwaalakumul latee ja’alal laahu lakum qiyaamanw-warzuqoohum feehaa waksoohum wa qooloo lahum qawlam ma’roofaa And make not over your property, which ALLAH has made a (means of) support for you, to the weak of understanding, and maintain them out of it, and clothe them and give them a good education.
4:6 وَابْتَلُوا الْيَتَامَىٰ حَتَّىٰ إِذَا بَلَغُوا النِّكَاحَ فَإِنْ آنَسْتُمْ مِنْهُمْ رُشْدًا فَادْفَعُوا إِلَيْهِمْ أَمْوَالَهُمْ ۖ وَلَا تَأْكُلُوهَا إِسْرَافًا وَبِدَارًا أَنْ يَكْبَرُوا ۚ وَمَنْ كَانَ غَنِيًّا فَلْيَسْتَعْفِفْ ۖ وَمَنْ كَانَ فَقِيرًا فَلْيَأْكُلْ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ ۚ فَإِذَا دَفَعْتُمْ إِلَيْهِمْ أَمْوَالَهُمْ فَأَشْهِدُوا عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِاللَّهِ حَسِيبًا Wabtalul yataamaa hattaaa izaa balaghun nikaaha fa in aanastum minhum rushdan fad fa’ooo ilaihim amwaalahum wa laa ta’ kuloohaaa israafanw wa bidaaran ai yakbaroo; wa man kaana ghaniyyan falyasta’ fif wa man kaana faqeeran fal ya’ kul bilma’roof; fa izaa dafa’tum ilaihim amwaalahum fa ash-hidoo ‘alaihim; wa kafaa billaahi Haseeba And test the orphans until they reach the age of marriage. Then if you find in them maturity of intellect, make over to them their property, and consume it not extravagantly and hastily against their growing up. And whoever is rich, let him abstain, and whoever is poor let him consume reasonably. And when you make over to them their property, call witnesses in their presence. And ALLAH is enough as a Reckoner.
4:7 لِلرِّجَالِ نَصِيبٌ مِمَّا تَرَكَ الْوَالِدَانِ وَالْأَقْرَبُونَ وَلِلنِّسَاءِ نَصِيبٌ مِمَّا تَرَكَ الْوَالِدَانِ وَالْأَقْرَبُونَ مِمَّا قَلَّ مِنْهُ أَوْ كَثُرَ ۚ نَصِيبًا مَفْرُوضًا Lirrijaali naseebum mimmaa tarakal waalidaani wal aqraboona wa lin nisaaa’i naseebum mimmaa tarakal waalidaani wal aqraboona mimmaa qalla minhu aw kasur; naseebam mafroodaa For men is a share of what the parents and the near relatives leave, and for women a share of what the parents and the near relatives leave, whether it be little or much — an appointed share.
4:8 وَإِذَا حَضَرَ الْقِسْمَةَ أُولُو الْقُرْبَىٰ وَالْيَتَامَىٰ وَالْمَسَاكِينُ فَارْزُقُوهُمْ مِنْهُ وَقُولُوا لَهُمْ قَوْلًا مَعْرُوفًا Wa izaa hadaral qismata ulul qurbaa walyataamaa walmasaakeenu farzuqoohum minhu wa qooloo lahum qawlam ma’roofaa And when relatives and the orphans and the needy are present at the division, give them out of it and speak to them kind words.
4:9 وَلْيَخْشَ الَّذِينَ لَوْ تَرَكُوا مِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ ذُرِّيَّةً ضِعَافًا خَافُوا عَلَيْهِمْ فَلْيَتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَلْيَقُولُوا قَوْلًا سَدِيدًا Walyakhshal lazeena law tarakoo min khalfihim zurriyyatan di’aafan khaafoo ‘alaihim falyattaqul laaha walyaqooloo qawlan sadeedaa And let those fear who, should they leave behind them weakly offspring, would fear on their account; so let them observe their duty to ALLAH and let them speak right words.
4:10 إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَأْكُلُونَ أَمْوَالَ الْيَتَامَىٰ ظُلْمًا إِنَّمَا يَأْكُلُونَ فِي بُطُونِهِمْ نَارًا ۖ وَسَيَصْلَوْنَ سَعِيرًا Innal lazeena ya’kuloona amwaalal yataamaa zulman innamaa ya’kuloona fee butoonihim Naaranw-wa sayaslawna sa’eeraa Those who swallow the property of the orphans unjustly, they swallow only fire into their bellies. And they will burn in blazing fire.

4:11 يُوصِيكُمُ اللَّهُ فِي أَوْلَادِكُمْ ۖ لِلذَّكَرِ مِثْلُ حَظِّ الْأُنْثَيَيْنِ ۚ فَإِنْ كُنَّ نِسَاءً فَوْقَ اثْنَتَيْنِ فَلَهُنَّ ثُلُثَا مَا تَرَكَ ۖ وَإِنْ كَانَتْ وَاحِدَةً فَلَهَا النِّصْفُ ۚ وَلِأَبَوَيْهِ لِكُلِّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمَا السُّدُسُ مِمَّا تَرَكَ إِنْ كَانَ لَهُ وَلَدٌ ۚ فَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ وَلَدٌ وَوَرِثَهُ أَبَوَاهُ فَلِأُمِّهِ الثُّلُثُ ۚ فَإِنْ كَانَ لَهُ إِخْوَةٌ فَلِأُمِّهِ السُّدُسُ ۚ مِنْ بَعْدِ وَصِيَّةٍ يُوصِي بِهَا أَوْ دَيْنٍ ۗ آبَاؤُكُمْ وَأَبْنَاؤُكُمْ لَا تَدْرُونَ أَيُّهُمْ أَقْرَبُ لَكُمْ نَفْعًا ۚ فَرِيضَةً مِنَ اللَّهِ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمًا Yooseekumul laahu feee awlaadikum liz zakari mislu hazzil unsayayn; fa in kunna nisaaa’an fawqas nataini falahunna sulusaa maa taraka wa in kaanat waahidatan falahan nisf; wa li abawaihi likulli waahidim minhumas sudusu mimmma taraka in kaana lahoo walad; fa il lam yakul lahoo waladunw wa warisahooo abawaahu fali ummihis sulus; fa in kaana lahoo ikhwatun fali ummihis sudus; mim ba’di wasiyyatiny yoosee bihaaa aw dayn; aabaaa’ukum wa abnaaa’ukum laa tadroona aiyuhum aqrabu lakum naf’aa; fareedatam minallaah; innal laaha kaana ‘Aleeman Hakeemaa ALLAH enjoins you concerning your children: for the male is the equal of the portion of two females; but if there be more than two females, two-thirds of what the deceased leaves is theirs; and if there be one, for her is the half. And as for his parents, for each of them is the sixth of what he leaves, if he has a child; but if he has no child and (only) his two parents inherit him, for his mother is the third; but if he has brothers, for his mother is the sixth, after (payment of) a bequest he may have bequeathed or a debt. Your parents and your children, you know not which of them is the nearer to you in benefit. This is an ordinance from ALLAH. ALLAH is surely ever Knowing, Wise.
4:12 وَلَكُمْ نِصْفُ مَا تَرَكَ أَزْوَاجُكُمْ إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُنَّ وَلَدٌ ۚ فَإِنْ كَانَ لَهُنَّ وَلَدٌ فَلَكُمُ الرُّبُعُ مِمَّا تَرَكْنَ ۚ مِنْ بَعْدِ وَصِيَّةٍ يُوصِينَ بِهَا أَوْ دَيْنٍ ۚ وَلَهُنَّ الرُّبُعُ مِمَّا تَرَكْتُمْ إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَكُمْ وَلَدٌ ۚ فَإِنْ كَانَ لَكُمْ وَلَدٌ فَلَهُنَّ الثُّمُنُ مِمَّا تَرَكْتُمْ ۚ مِنْ بَعْدِ وَصِيَّةٍ تُوصُونَ بِهَا أَوْ دَيْنٍ ۗ وَإِنْ كَانَ رَجُلٌ يُورَثُ كَلَالَةً أَوِ امْرَأَةٌ وَلَهُ أَخٌ أَوْ أُخْتٌ فَلِكُلِّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمَا السُّدُسُ ۚ فَإِنْ كَانُوا أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَٰلِكَ فَهُمْ شُرَكَاءُ فِي الثُّلُثِ ۚ مِنْ بَعْدِ وَصِيَّةٍ يُوصَىٰ بِهَا أَوْ دَيْنٍ غَيْرَ مُضَارٍّ ۚ وَصِيَّةً مِنَ اللَّهِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَلِيمٌ Wa lakum nisfu maa taraka azwaajukum il lam yakul lahunna walad; fa in kaana lahunna waladun falakumur rub’u mimmaa tarakna mim ba’di wasiyyatiny yooseena bihaaa aw dayn; wa lahunnar rubu’u mimmaa taraktum il lam yakul lakum walad; fa in kaana lakum waladun falahunnas sumunu mimmaa taraktum; mim ba’di wasiyyatin toosoona bihaaa aw dayn; wa in kaana rajuluny yoorasu kalaalatan awim ra atunw wa lahooo akhun aw ukhtun falikulli waahidim minhumas sudus; fa in kaanooo aksara min zaalika fahum shurakaaa’u fissulus; mim ba’di wasiyyatiny yoosaa bihaaa aw dainin ghaira mudaaarr; wasiyyatam minal laah; wallaahu ‘Aleemun Haleem And yours is half of what your wives leave if they have no child; but if they have a child, your share is a fourth of what they leave after (payment of) any bequest they may have bequeathed or a debt; and theirs is the fourth of what you leave if you have no child, but if you have a child, their share is the eighth of what you leave after (payment of) a bequest you may have bequeathed or a debt. And if a man or a woman, having no children, leaves property to be inherited and he (or she) has a brother or a sister, then for each of them is the sixth; but if they are more than that, they shall be sharers in the third after (payment of) a bequest that may have been bequeathed or a debt not injuring (others). This is an ordinance from ALLAH: and ALLAH is Knowing, Forbearing.
4:13 تِلْكَ حُدُودُ اللَّهِ ۚ وَمَنْ يُطِعِ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ يُدْخِلْهُ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي مِنْ تَحْتِهَا الْأَنْهَارُ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا ۚ وَذَٰلِكَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ Tilka hudoodul laah; wa mai yuti’il laaha wa Rasoolahoo yudkhilhu Jannaatin tajree min tahtihal anhaaru khaalideena feehaa; wa zaalikal fawzul ‘azeem These are ALLAH’s limits. And whoever obeys ALLAH and His Messenger, He will admit him to Gardens wherein flow rivers, to abide in them. And this is the great achievement.
4:14 وَمَنْ يَعْصِ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَيَتَعَدَّ حُدُودَهُ يُدْخِلْهُ نَارًا خَالِدًا فِيهَا وَلَهُ عَذَابٌ مُهِينٌ Wa mai ya’sil laaha wa Rasoolahoo wa yata’adda hudoodahoo yudkhilhu Naaran khaalidan feehaa wa lahoo ‘azaabum muheen And whoever disobeys ALLAH and His Messenger and goes beyond His limits, He will make him enter fire to abide in it, and for him is an abasing chastisement.
4:15 وَاللَّاتِي يَأْتِينَ الْفَاحِشَةَ مِنْ نِسَائِكُمْ فَاسْتَشْهِدُوا عَلَيْهِنَّ أَرْبَعَةً مِنْكُمْ ۖ فَإِنْ شَهِدُوا فَأَمْسِكُوهُنَّ فِي الْبُيُوتِ حَتَّىٰ يَتَوَفَّاهُنَّ الْمَوْتُ أَوْ يَجْعَلَ اللَّهُ لَهُنَّ سَبِيلًا Wallaatee ya’teenal faahishata min nisaaa’ikum fastash-hidoo ‘alaihinna arba’atam minkum fa in shahidoo fa amsikoohunna fil buyooti hatta yatawaffaa hunnal mawtu aw yaj’alal laahu lahunna sabeelaa And as for those of your women who are guilty of an indecency, call to witness against them four (witnesses) from among you; so if they bear witness, confine them to the houses until death takes them away or ALLAH opens a way for them.
4:16 وَاللَّذَانِ يَأْتِيَانِهَا مِنْكُمْ فَآذُوهُمَا ۖ فَإِنْ تَابَا وَأَصْلَحَا فَأَعْرِضُوا عَنْهُمَا ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ تَوَّابًا رَحِيمًا Wallazaani ya’tiyaanihaa minkum fa aazoohumaa fa in taabaa wa aslahaa fa a’ridoo ‘anhumaaa; innal laaha kaana Tawwaabar Raheema And as for the two of you who are guilty of it, give them both a slight punishment; then if they repent and amend, turn aside from them. Surely ALLAH is ever Oft-returning (to mercy), the Merciful.
4:17 إِنَّمَا التَّوْبَةُ عَلَى اللَّهِ لِلَّذِينَ يَعْمَلُونَ السُّوءَ بِجَهَالَةٍ ثُمَّ يَتُوبُونَ مِنْ قَرِيبٍ فَأُولَٰئِكَ يَتُوبُ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ ۗ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمًا Innamat tawbatu ‘alallaahi lillazeena ya’maloonas sooo’a bijahaalatin summa yatooboona min qareebin fa ulaa’ika yatoobul laahu ‘alaihim; wa kaanal laahu ‘Aleeman Hakeemaa Repentance with ALLAH is only for those who do evil in ignorance, then turn (to ALLAH) soon, so these it is to whom ALLAH turns (mercifully). And ALLAH is ever Knowing, Wise.
4:18 وَلَيْسَتِ التَّوْبَةُ لِلَّذِينَ يَعْمَلُونَ السَّيِّئَاتِ حَتَّىٰ إِذَا حَضَرَ أَحَدَهُمُ الْمَوْتُ قَالَ إِنِّي تُبْتُ الْآنَ وَلَا الَّذِينَ يَمُوتُونَ وَهُمْ كُفَّارٌ ۚ أُولَٰئِكَ أَعْتَدْنَا لَهُمْ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا Wa laisatit tawbatu lillazeena ya’maloonas saiyiaati hattaaa izaa hadara ahadahumul mawtu qaala innee tubtul ‘aana wa lallazeena yamootoona wa hum kuffaar; ulaaa’ika a’tadnaa lahum ‘azaaban aleemaa And repentance is not for those who go on doing evil deeds, until when death comes to one of them, he says: Now I repent; nor (for) those who die while they are disbelievers. For such We have prepared a painful chastisement.
Yaaa aiyuhal lazeena aamanoo laa yahillu lakum an tarisun nisaaa’a karhan wa laa ta’duloohunna litazhaboo biba’di maaa aataitumoohunna illaaa ai ya’teena bifaahishatim mubaiyinah; wa ‘aashiroo hunna bilma’roof; fa in karihtumoohunna fa’asaaa an takrahoo shai’anw wa yaj’alal laahu feehi khairan kaseeraa O you who believe, it is not lawful for you to take women as heritage against (their) will. Nor should you straiten them by taking part of what you have given them, unless they are guilty of manifest indecency. And treat them kindly. Then if you hate them, it may be that you dislike a thing while ALLAH has placed abundant good in it.
4:20 وَإِنْ أَرَدْتُمُ اسْتِبْدَالَ زَوْجٍ مَكَانَ زَوْجٍ وَآتَيْتُمْ إِحْدَاهُنَّ قِنْطَارًا فَلَا تَأْخُذُوا مِنْهُ شَيْئًا ۚ أَتَأْخُذُونَهُ بُهْتَانًا وَإِثْمًا مُبِينًا Wa in arattumustib daala zawjim makaana zawjin wa aataitum ihdaahunna qintaaran falaa ta’khuzoo minhu shai’aa; ata’khuzoonahoo buhtaannanw wa ismam mubeenaa And if you wish to have (one) wife in the place of another and you have given one of them a heap of gold, take nothing from it. Would you take it by slandering (her) and (doing her) manifest wrong?

4:21 وَكَيْفَ تَأْخُذُونَهُ وَقَدْ أَفْضَىٰ بَعْضُكُمْ إِلَىٰ بَعْضٍ وَأَخَذْنَ مِنْكُمْ مِيثَاقًا غَلِيظًا Wa kaifa ta’khuzoonahoo wa qad afdaa ba’dukum ilaa ba’dinw wa akhazna minkum meesaaqan ghaleezaa And how can you take it when one of you has already gone in to the other and they have taken from you a strong covenant?
4:22 وَلَا تَنْكِحُوا مَا نَكَحَ آبَاؤُكُمْ مِنَ النِّسَاءِ إِلَّا مَا قَدْ سَلَفَ ۚ إِنَّهُ كَانَ فَاحِشَةً وَمَقْتًا وَسَاءَ سَبِيلًا Wa laa tankihoo maa nakaha aabaaa’ukum minan nisaaa’i illaa maa qad salaf; innahoo kaana faahishatanw wa maqtanw wa saaa’a sabeelaa And marry not women whom your fathers married, except what has already passed. This surely is indecent and hateful; and it is an evil way.

Then as to those whom you profit by (by marrying), give them their dowries as appointed. And there is no blame on you about what you mutually agree after what is appointed (of dowry). Surely ALLAH is ever Knowing, Wise.

Note This verse reiterates the continuity between the laws indicated by the Koran and those that were imposed on the other peoples of the Book (understood as Jews and Christians).
4:27 وَاللَّهُ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يَتُوبَ عَلَيْكُمْ وَيُرِيدُ الَّذِينَ يَتَّبِعُونَ الشَّهَوَاتِ أَنْ تَمِيلُوا مَيْلًا عَظِيمًا Wallaahu yureedu ai yatooba ‘alaikum wa yureedul lazeena yattabi ‘oonash shahawaati an tameeloo mailan ‘azeemaa And ALLAH desires to turn to you (mercifully). And those who follow (their) lusts desire that you should deviate (with) a great deviation.
4:28 يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ أَنْ يُخَفِّفَ عَنْكُمْ ۚ وَخُلِقَ الْإِنْسَانُ ضَعِيفًا Yureedul laahu ai yukhaffifa ‘ankum; wa khuliqal insaanu da’eefaa ALLAH desires to make light your burdens, and man is created weak.
4:29 يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَأْكُلُوا أَمْوَالَكُمْ بَيْنَكُمْ بِالْبَاطِلِ إِلَّا أَنْ تَكُونَ تِجَارَةً عَنْ تَرَاضٍ مِنْكُمْ ۚ وَلَا تَقْتُلُوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ بِكُمْ رَحِيمًا Yaaa aiyuhal lazeena aamanoo laa ta’kulooo amwaalakum bainakum bilbaatili ‘illaaa an takoona tijaaratan ‘an taraadim minkum; wa laa taqtulooo anfusakum; innal laaha kaana bikum Raheemaa O you who believe, devour not your property among yourselves by illegal methods except that it be trading by your mutual consent. And kill not your people. Surely ALLAH is ever Merciful to you.
Note Speculations, deceptions, swindles that can also have a legal form, and therefore fall under the prohibition expressed in this verse. It will not be able to be justified in the eyes of GOD and of the believers an operation that determines a damage for one of the parts. Who does not follow the Justice is on the side of the evil and sinner.
4:30 وَمَنْ يَفْعَلْ ذَٰلِكَ عُدْوَانًا وَظُلْمًا فَسَوْفَ نُصْلِيهِ نَارًا ۚ وَكَانَ ذَٰلِكَ عَلَى اللَّهِ يَسِيرًا Wa mai yaf’al zaalika ‘udwaananw wa zulman fasawfa nusleehi Naaraa; wa kaana zaalika ‘alal laahi yaseeraa And whoso does this aggressively and unjustly, We shall soon cast him into fire. And this is ever easy for ALLAH.

So the good women are obedient, guarding the unseen as ALLAH has guarded. And (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the beds and chastise them. So if they obey you, seek not a way against them. Surely ALLAH is ever Exalted, Great.
4:35 وَإِنْ خِفْتُمْ شِقَاقَ بَيْنَهِمَا فَابْعَثُوا حَكَمًا مِنْ أَهْلِهِ وَحَكَمًا مِنْ أَهْلِهَا إِنْ يُرِيدَا إِصْلَاحًا يُوَفِّقِ اللَّهُ بَيْنَهُمَا ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ عَلِيمًا خَبِيرًا Wa in khiftum shiqaaqa baini himaa fab’asoo haka mam min ahlihee wa hakamam min ahlihaa; iny-yureedaaa islaah ai-yuwaffiqil laahu bainahumaa; innal laaha kaana ‘Aleeman Khabeeraa And if you fear a breach between the two, appoint an arbiter from his people and an arbiter from her people. Surely ALLAH loves not such as are proud, boastful.

In Muslim tradition, it is believed that this verse was revealed during an intermediate phase prior to the total prohibition of alcohol consumption. Yet there is no mention of an absolute ban, even though verses 90–91 of Sura 5 associate it with evil. The Quran can be interpreted as a very moderate book; it depends on the spirit of the reader.
“Impurity”: the state of janaba (“junub”) usually refers to impurity resulting from sexual intercourse or proximity to a woman’s menstrual period. Typically, this condition not only prevents one from performing prayer but also prohibits contact with a copy of the Quran and staying in the mosque.
“Tayammum” is permitted when water is unavailable or when using water is not recommended for health reasons or due to the water being impure. It involves rubbing one’s hands on the ground (rock, sand, etc.), shaking them off, and then wiping them over the face and arms.

Some false believers and followers of Muhammad (usually identified as Jews) used to say to the Messenger when he recited the Quran, “Ra’ina,” which means “read slowly,” so that they could better understand what the Messenger was reciting. But these Jews of Medina used the same term when addressing the Prophet, pretending to mean “give us your attention” while distorting the way they pronounced the word to make it sound like “Ru’na” (derived from the word “Ra’inu,” which means “wicked” in Hebrew). Almighty God warned the Prophet and the believers against this, forbidding them to use this word when addressing Muhammad, and commanded them instead to use the term “Unthurna” (look at us).

O you who were given the Book, believe in what We have sent down, confirming what is with you, before We efface faces and turn them backward, or curse them as We cursed the companions of the Sabbath. And the command of GOD is always fulfilled.
4:48 إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَغْفِرُ أَن يُشْرَكَ بِهِ وَيَغْفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ لِمَن يَشَاءُ ۚ وَمَن يُشْرِكْ بِاللَّهِ فَقَدِ افْتَرَىٰ إِثْمًا عَظِيمًا Inna Allāha lā yaghfiru an yushraka bihi wa yaghfiru mā dūna dhālika liman yashāʾ wa man yushrik bi-llāhi faqad iftarā ithman ʿaẓīmā Indeed, GOD does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And whoever associates others with GOD has certainly fabricated a tremendous sin. Indeed, GOD does not forgive that partners be associated with Him, but He forgives what is lesser than that for whom He wills. Whoever associates with GOD has indeed forged a grave sin.
4:49 أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الَّذِينَ يُزَكُّونَ أَنفُسَهُم ۚ بَلِ اللَّهُ يُزَكِّي مَن يَشَاءُ وَلَا يُظْلَمُونَ فَتِيلًا Alam tara ilā alladhīna yuzakkūna anfusahum balillāhu yuzakkī man yashāʾ wa lā yuẓlamūna fatīlā Have you not seen those who claim purity for themselves? Rather, GOD purifies whom He wills, and injustice is not done to them, even as much as a thread. Have you not seen those who declare themselves pure? Rather, GOD purifies whom He wills, and they are not wronged even to the slightest degree.
4:50 انظُرْ كَيْفَ يَفْتَرُونَ عَلَى اللَّهِ الْكَذِبَ ۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِهِ إِثْمًا مُّبِينًا Unẓur kayfa yaftarūna ʿalā Allāhi al-kadhib wa kafā bihi ithman mubīnā Look how they invent about GOD untruth, and sufficient is that as a manifest sin. See how they fabricate lies against GOD. This alone is a clear and sufficient sin.
4:51 أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا نَصِيبًا مِّنَ الْكِتَابِ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْجِبْتِ وَالطَّاغُوتِ وَيَقُولُونَ لِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا هَٰؤُلَاءِ أَهْدَىٰ مِنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا سَبِيلًا Alam tara ilā alladhīna ūtū naṣīban mina al-kitābi yuʾminūna bi al-jibti wa aṭ-ṭāghūti wa yaqūlūna lilladhīna kafarū hāʾulāʾi ahdā mina alladhīna āmanū sabīlā Have you not seen those who were given a portion of the Book? They believe in superstition and false objects of worship and say about the disbelievers, “These are better guided than the believers.” Have you not seen those given a portion of the Book? They believe in falsehood and tyranny, and say of the disbelievers: “These are better guided than the believers.”
4:52 أُولَٰئِكَ الَّذِينَ لَعَنَهُمُ اللَّهُ ۖ وَمَن يَلْعَنِ اللَّهُ فَلَن تَجِدَ لَهُ نَصِيرًا Ulāʾika alladhīna laʿanahumu Allāhu wa man yalʿani Allāhu falan tajida lahu naṣīrā Those are the ones whom GOD has cursed; and he whom GOD curses – never will you find for him a helper. Those are the ones whom GOD has cursed, and whoever is cursed by GOD will find no helper.
4:53 أَمْ لَهُمْ نَصِيبٌ مِّنَ الْمُلْكِ فَإِذًا لَّا يُؤْتُونَ النَّاسَ نَقِيرًا Am lahum naṣībun mina al-mulki fa idhan lā yuʾtūna an-nāsa naqīrā Or have they a share of dominion? Then they would not give the people even as much as the speck on a date seed. Do they have a share in sovereignty? If so, they would not give people even the smallest fraction.
4:54 أَمْ يَحْسُدُونَ النَّاسَ عَلَىٰ مَا آتَاهُمُ اللَّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِ ۖ فَقَدْ آتَيْنَا آلَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْكِتَابَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ وَآتَيْنَاهُم مُّلْكًا عَظِيمًا Am yaḥsudūna an-nāsa ʿalā mā ātāhumu Allāhu min faḍlih faqad ātaynā āla Ibrāhīma al-kitāba wa al-ḥikmata wa ātaynāhum mulkan ʿaẓīmā Or do they envy people for what GOD has given them of His bounty? But We had already given the family of Abraham the Scripture and wisdom and conferred upon them a great kingdom. Or do they envy people for what GOD has granted them of His grace? We had already given the family of Abraham the Scripture, wisdom, and a great dominion.
4:55 فَمِنْهُم مَّنْ آمَنَ بِهِ وَمِنْهُم مَّن صَدَّ عَنْهُ ۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِجَهَنَّمَ سَعِيرًا Faminhum man āmana bihi wa minhum man ṣadda ʿanhu wa kafā bi-jahannama saʿīrā And among them were those who believed in it, and among them were those who turned away from it. And sufficient is Hell as a blaze. Among them are those who believed, and among them are those who turned away. And Hell is sufficient as a blazing fire.
4:56 إِنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِآيَاتِنَا سَوْفَ نُصْلِيهِمْ نَارًا ۖ كُلَّمَا نَضِجَتْ جُلُودُهُم بَدَّلْنَاهُمْ جُلُودًا غَيْرَهَا لِيَذُوقُوا الْعَذَابَ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ عَزِيزًا حَكِيمًا Inna alladhīna kafarū bi-āyātinā sawfa nuṣlīhim nāran kullamā naḍijat julūduhum baddalnāhum julūdan ghayrahā li-yadhūqū al-ʿadhāb inna Allāha kāna ʿazīzan ḥakīmā Indeed, those who disbelieve in Our verses – We will drive them into a Fire. Every time their skins are roasted through, We will replace them with other skins so they may taste the punishment. Indeed, GOD is ever Exalted in Might and Wise. Indeed, those who deny Our signs—We shall cast them into a Fire. Whenever their skins are consumed, We replace them with others so that they may taste the punishment. Indeed, GOD is Mighty, Wise.
4:57 وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ سَنُدْخِلُهُمْ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهَا الْأَنْهَارُ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا أَبَدًا ۖ لَّهُمْ فِيهَا أَزْوَاجٌ مُّطَهَّرَةٌ وَنُدْخِلُهُمْ ظِلًّا ظَلِيلًا Wa alladhīna āmanū wa ʿamilū aṣ-ṣāliḥāti sanudkhiluhum jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā al-anhāru khālidīna fīhā abadan lahum fīhā azwājun muṭahharatun wa nudkhiluhum ẓillan ẓalīlā But those who believe and do righteous deeds – We will admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide forever. For them therein are purified spouses, and We will admit them to deepening shade. But those who believe and do righteous deeds—We shall admit them into gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding therein forever. They will have purified companions, and We shall admit them into abundant shade.
4:58 إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُكُمْ أَن تُؤَدُّوا الْأَمَانَاتِ إِلَىٰ أَهْلِهَا وَإِذَا حَكَمْتُم بَيْنَ النَّاسِ أَن تَحْكُمُوا بِالْعَدْلِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ نِعِمَّا يَعِظُكُم بِهِ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ سَمِيعًا بَصِيرًا Inna Allāha yaʾmurukum an tuʾaddū al-amānāti ilā ahlihā wa idhā ḥakamtum bayna an-nāsi an taḥkumū bi al-ʿadli inna Allāha niʿimmā yaʿiẓukum bihi inna Allāha kāna samīʿan baṣīrā Indeed, GOD commands you to render trusts to whom they are due and when you judge between people to judge with justice. Indeed, GOD admonishes you with what is excellent. Indeed, GOD is ever Hearing and Seeing. Indeed, GOD commands you to deliver trusts to their rightful owners, and when you judge between people, to judge with justice. Indeed, how excellent is what GOD exhorts you to. Surely, GOD is Hearing, Seeing.
4:59 يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُوا الرَّسُولَ وَأُولِي الْأَمْرِ مِنكُمْ ۖ فَإِن تَنَازَعْتُمْ فِي شَيْءٍ فَرُدُّوهُ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَالرَّسُولِ إِن كُنتُمْ تُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ خَيْرٌ وَأَحْسَنُ تَأْوِيلًا Yā ayyuhā alladhīna āmanū aṭīʿū Allāha wa aṭīʿū ar-rasūla wa ulī al-amri minkum fa in tanāzaʿtum fī shayʾin faruddūhu ilā Allāhi wa ar-rasūli in kuntum تؤمنون بالله واليوم الآخر ذلك خير وأحسن تأويلاً O you who believe, obey GOD and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And if you disagree over anything, refer it to GOD and the Messenger, if you should believe in GOD and the Last Day. That is the best way and best in result. O you who believe, obey GOD, obey the Messenger, and those entrusted with authority among you. If you dispute over anything, refer it back to GOD and the Messenger, if you believe in GOD and the Last Day. That is better and yields the best outcome.
4:60 أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الَّذِينَ يَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّهُمْ آمَنُوا بِمَا أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكَ وَمَا أُنزِلَ مِن قَبْلِكَ يُرِيدُونَ أَن يَتَحَاكَمُوا إِلَى الطَّاغُوتِ وَقَدْ أُمِرُوا أَن يَكْفُرُوا بِهِ وَيُرِيدُ الشَّيْطَانُ أَن يُضِلَّهُمْ ضَلَالًا بَعِيدًا Alam tara ilā alladhīna yazʿumūna annahum āmanū bimā unzila ilayka wa mā unzila min qablika yurīdūna an yataḥākamū ilā aṭ-ṭāghūt wa qad umirū an yakfurū bihi wa yurīdu ash-shayṭānu an yuḍillahum ḍalālan baʿīdā Have you not seen those who claim to believe in what was revealed to you and what was revealed before you? They wish to refer judgment to false deities while they were commanded to reject them; and Satan wishes to lead them far astray. Have you not seen those who claim to believe in what was revealed to you and before you? They seek judgment from false authorities, though they were commanded to reject them. And Satan desires to lead them far astray.

Verse Arabic Transliteration English English (ASH)
4:61 وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ تَعَالَوْا إِلَىٰ مَا أَنزَلَ اللَّهُ وَإِلَى الرَّسُولِ رَأَيْتَ الْمُنَافِقِينَ يَصُدُّونَ عَنكَ صُدُودًا Wa idhā qīla lahum taʿālaw ilā mā anzala Allāhu wa ilā ar-rasūli raʾayta al-munāfiqīna yaṣuddūna ʿanka ṣudūdā And when it is said to them, “Come to what GOD has revealed and to the Messenger,” you see the hypocrites turning away from you in aversion. And when it is said to them, “Come to what GOD has revealed and to the Messenger,” you see the hypocrites turning away from you with clear aversion.
4:62 فَكَيْفَ إِذَا أَصَابَتْهُم مُّصِيبَةٌ بِمَا قَدَّمَتْ أَيْدِيهِمْ ثُمَّ جَاءُوكَ يَحْلِفُونَ بِاللَّهِ إِنْ أَرَدْنَا إِلَّا إِحْسَانًا وَتَوْفِيقًا Fa kayfa idhā aṣābat-hum muṣībatun bimā qaddamat aydīhim thumma jāʾūka yaḥlifūna bi-llāhi in aradnā illā iḥsānan wa tawfīqā So how will it be when disaster strikes them because of what their hands have put forth, then they come to you swearing by GOD, “We intended nothing but good conduct and accommodation”? So how will it be when a calamity befalls them because of what their own hands have sent forth, and then they come to you swearing by GOD, “We intended nothing but good and reconciliation”?
4:63 أُولَٰئِكَ الَّذِينَ يَعْلَمُ اللَّهُ مَا فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ فَأَعْرِضْ عَنْهُمْ وَعِظْهُمْ وَقُل لَّهُمْ فِي أَنفُسِهِمْ قَوْلًا بَلِيغًا Ulāʾika alladhīna yaʿlamu Allāhu mā fī qulūbihim fa aʿriḍ ʿanhum wa ʿiẓhum wa qul lahum fī anfusihim qawlan balīghā Those are the ones of whom GOD knows what is in their hearts, so turn away from them but admonish them and speak to them a far-reaching word about themselves. Those are the ones whose hearts are known to GOD; so turn away from them, yet admonish them and speak to them words that penetrate their inner selves.
4:64 وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا مِن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا لِيُطَاعَ بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ ۚ وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ إِذ ظَّلَمُوا أَنفُسَهُمْ جَاءُوكَ فَاسْتَغْفَرُوا اللَّهَ وَاسْتَغْفَرَ لَهُمُ الرَّسُولُ لَوَجَدُوا اللَّهَ تَوَّابًا رَّحِيمًا Wa mā arsalnā min rasūlin illā li-yuṭāʿa bi-idhni Allāhi wa law annahum idh ẓalamū anfusahum jāʾūka fa-staghfarū Allāha wa istaghfara lahumu ar-rasūlu la-wajadū Allāha tawwāban raḥīmā And We did not send any messenger except to be obeyed by permission of GOD. And if, when they wronged themselves, they had come to you and asked forgiveness of GOD and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found GOD Accepting of repentance and Merciful. We did not send any messenger except to be obeyed by the permission of GOD. If, after wronging themselves, they had come to you and sought forgiveness from GOD, and the Messenger had sought forgiveness for them, they would have found GOD ever accepting of repentance, ever merciful.
4:65 فَلَا وَرَبِّكَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ حَتَّىٰ يُحَكِّمُوكَ فِيمَا شَجَرَ بَيْنَهُمْ ثُمَّ لَا يَجِدُوا فِي أَنفُسِهِمْ حَرَجًا مِّمَّا قَضَيْتَ وَيُسَلِّمُوا تَسْلِيمًا Fa-lā wa rabbika lā yuʾminūna ḥattā yuḥakkimūka fīmā shajara baynahum thumma lā yajidū fī anfusihim ḥarajan mimmā qaḍayta wa yusallimū taslīmā But no, by your Lord, they will not believe until they make you judge concerning that over which they dispute among themselves and then find within themselves no discomfort from what you have judged and submit in full submission. No, by your Lord, they will not truly believe until they make you judge in what arises between them, and then find within themselves no resistance to what you decide, but submit with full submission.

Verse Arabic Transliteration English English (ASH)
4:66 وَلَوْ أَنَّا كَتَبْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ أَنِ اقْتُلُوا أَنفُسَكُمْ أَوِ اخْرُجُوا مِن دِيَارِكُم مَّا فَعَلُوهُ إِلَّا قَلِيلٌ مِّنْهُمْ ۖ وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ فَعَلُوا مَا يُوعَظُونَ بِهِ لَكَانَ خَيْرًا لَّهُمْ وَأَشَدَّ تَثْبِيتًا Wa law annā katabnā ʿalayhim ani uqtulū anfusakum aw ikhrujū min diyārikum mā faʿalūhu illā qalīlun minhum wa law annahum faʿalū mā yūʿaẓūna bihi lakāna khayran lahum wa ashadda tathbītā And if We had decreed upon them, “Kill yourselves” or “Leave your homes,” they would not have done it except for a few of them. But if they had done what they were instructed, it would have been better for them and more strengthening. If We had prescribed for them, “Take your own lives” or “Leave your homes,” they would not have done so except for a few among them. Yet if they had acted upon what they were instructed, it would have been better for them and more firm in strengthening them.
4:67 وَإِذًا لَّآتَيْنَاهُم مِّن لَّدُنَّا أَجْرًا عَظِيمًا Wa idhan la-ātaynāhum min ladunnā ajran ʿaẓīmā And then We would have given them from Us a great reward. And then We would have granted them from Our presence a great reward.
4:68 وَلَهَدَيْنَاهُمْ صِرَاطًا مُّسْتَقِيمًا Wa la-hadaynāhum ṣirāṭan mustaqīmā And We would have guided them to a straight path. And We would have guided them upon a straight path.
Wa man yuṭiʿi Allāha wa ar-rasūla fa-ulāʾika maʿa alladhīna anʿama Allāhu ʿalayhim mina an-nabiyyīna wa aṣ-ṣiddīqīna wa ash-shuhadāʾi wa aṣ-ṣāliḥīna wa ḥasuna ulāʾika rafīqā And whoever obeys GOD and the Messenger—those will be with the ones upon whom GOD has bestowed favor: of the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs, and the righteous. And excellent are those as companions. Whoever obeys GOD and the Messenger will be among those upon whom GOD has bestowed grace: the prophets, the truthful, the witnesses, and the righteous—and how excellent are such companions.
4:70 ذَٰلِكَ الْفَضْلُ مِنَ اللَّهِ ۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِاللَّهِ عَلِيمًا Dhālika al-faḍlu mina Allāh wa kafā bi-llāhi ʿalīmā That is the bounty from GOD, and sufficient is GOD as Knowing. That is the فضل (grace) from GOD, and GOD is sufficient as All-Knowing.
4:71 يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا خُذُوا حِذْرَكُمْ فَانفِرُوا ثُبَاتٍ أَوِ انفِرُوا جَمِيعًا Yā ayyuhā alladhīna āmanū khudhū ḥidhrakum fanfirū thubātin aw infirū jamīʿā O you who have believed, take your precaution and either go forth in companies or go forth all together. O you who believe, take your precautions and go forth either in groups or all together.
Wa inna minkum la-man layubaṭṭiʾanna fa in aṣābatkum muṣībatun qāla qad anʿama Allāhu ʿalayya idh lam akun maʿahum shahīdā And indeed, among you is he who lingers behind; and if disaster strikes you, he says, “GOD has favored me in that I was not present with them.” Indeed, among you are those who hold back; and if a misfortune strikes you, they say: “GOD has favored me, since I was not with them.”
Wa la-in aṣābakum faḍlun mina Allāhi la-yaqūlanna ka-an lam takun baynakum wa baynahu mawaddatun yā laytanī kuntu maʿahum fa-afūza fawzan ʿaẓīmā But if bounty comes to you from GOD, he will surely say, as if there had never been between you and him any affection, “Oh, I wish I had been with them so I could have attained a great attainment.” But if a favor from GOD comes to you, he will say—as though there had never been affection between you and him—“If only I had been with them, I would have achieved a great success.”
4:74 فَلْيُقَاتِلْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ الَّذِينَ يَشْرُونَ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا بِالْآخِرَةِ ۚ وَمَن يُقَاتِلْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَيُقْتَلْ أَوْ يَغْلِبْ فَسَوْفَ نُؤْتِيهِ أَجْرًا عَظِيمًا Fal-yuqātil fī sabīli Allāhi alladhīna yashrūna al-ḥayāta ad-dunyā bi al-ākhirah wa man yuqātil fī sabīli Allāhi fa-yuqtal aw yaghlib fa-sawfa nuʾtīhi ajran ʿaẓīmā So let those fight in the cause of GOD who sell the life of this world for the Hereafter. And whoever fights in the cause of GOD and is killed or achieves victory—We will bestow upon him a great reward. So let those strive in the path of GOD who exchange the life of this world for the Hereafter. Whoever strives in the path of GOD—whether slain or victorious—We shall grant him a great reward.

4:75 وَمَا لَكُمْ لَا تُقَاتِلُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَالْمُسْتَضْعَفِينَ مِنَ الرِّجَالِ وَالنِّسَاءِ وَالْوِلْدَانِ الَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا أَخْرِجْنَا مِنْ هَٰذِهِ الْقَرْيَةِ الظَّالِمِ أَهْلُهَا وَاجْعَل لَّنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ وَلِيًّا وَاجْعَل لَّنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ نَصِيرًا Wa mā lakum lā tuqātilūna fī sabīli Allāhi wa al-mustaḍʿafīna mina ar-rijāli wa an-nisāʾi wa al-wildāni alladhīna yaqūlūna rabbanā akhrijnā min hādhihi al-qaryati aẓ-ẓālimi ahluhā wa ijʿal lanā min ladunka waliyyan wa ijʿal lanā min ladunka naṣīrā And what is with you that you do not fight in the cause of GOD and the oppressed among men, women, and children who say, “Our Lord, take us out of this city of oppressive people and appoint for us from Yourself a protector and appoint for us from Yourself a helper”? What is with you that you do not fight in the path of GOD and for the oppressed among men, women, and children, who cry: “Our Lord, bring us out of this town whose people are unjust, and appoint for us from Yourself a protector and a helper”?
4:76 الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا يُقَاتِلُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا يُقَاتِلُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ الطَّاغُوتِ فَقَاتِلُوا أَوْلِيَاءَ الشَّيْطَانِ ۖ إِنَّ كَيْدَ الشَّيْطَانِ كَانَ ضَعِيفًا Alladhīna āmanū yuqātilūna fī sabīli Allāhi wa alladhīna kafarū yuqātilūna fī sabīli aṭ-ṭāghūt fa-qātilū awliyāʾa ash-shayṭān inna kayda ash-shayṭāni kāna ḍaʿīfā Those who believe fight in the cause of GOD, and those who disbelieve fight in the cause of ṭāghūt. So fight against the allies of Satan. Indeed, the plot of Satan has ever been weak. Those who believe fight in the path of GOD, while those who deny fight in the path of ṭāghūt. So fight against the allies of Satan; indeed, the scheming of Satan is weak.

If only You had delayed it for a short time.” Say, “The enjoyment of this world is little, and the Hereafter is better for the one who is mindful. And you will not be wronged even to the slightest extent.” Have you not seen those who were told: “Restrain your hands, establish prayer, and give zakah”? Yet when fighting was prescribed for them, a group among them feared people as they should fear GOD—or even more—and said: “Our Lord, why have You prescribed fighting for us? If only You had delayed it for a short time.” Say: “The enjoyment of this world is little, while the Hereafter is better for the one who is mindful. And you will not be wronged even in the slightest measure.”
4:78 أَيْنَمَا تَكُونُوا يُدْرِككُّمُ الْمَوْتُ وَلَوْ كُنتُمْ فِي بُرُوجٍ مُّشَيَّدَةٍ ۗ وَإِن تُصِبْهُمْ حَسَنَةٌ يَقُولُوا هَٰذِهِ مِنْ عِندِ اللَّهِ ۖ وَإِن تُصِبْهُمْ سَيِّئَةٌ يَقُولُوا هَٰذِهِ مِنْ عِندِكَ قُلْ كُلٌّ مِّنْ عِندِ اللَّهِ ۖ فَمَالِ هَٰذِهِ الْقَوْمِ لَا يَكَادُونَ يَفْقَهُونَ حَدِيثًا Aynamā takūnū yudrikkumu al-mawtu wa law kuntum fī burūjin mushayyadah wa in tuṣib-hum ḥasanatun yaqūlū hādhihi min ʿindi Allāh wa in tuṣib-hum sayyiʾatun yaqūlū hādhihi min ʿindik qul kullun min ʿindi Allāh fa mā li-hāʾulāʾi al-qawmi lā yakādūna yafqahūna ḥadīthā Wherever you may be, death will overtake you, even if you should be within towers of lofty construction. And if good comes to them, they say, “This is from GOD”; but if evil befalls them, they say, “This is from you.” Say, “All is from GOD.” So what is wrong with these people that they can hardly understand any statement? Wherever you may be, death will reach you—even if you are within fortified towers. If good befalls them, they say: “This is from GOD”; but if harm befalls them, they say: “This is from you.” Say: “All is from GOD.” What is wrong with these people, that they scarcely understand what is being said?
4:79 مَّا أَصَابَكَ مِنْ حَسَنَةٍ فَمِنَ اللَّهِ ۖ وَمَا أَصَابَكَ مِن سَيِّئَةٍ فَمِن نَّفْسِكَ ۚ وَأَرْسَلْنَاكَ لِلنَّاسِ رَسُولًا ۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِاللَّهِ شَهِيدًا Mā aṣābaka min ḥasanatin fa-mina Allāh wa mā aṣābaka min sayyiʾatin fa-min nafsik wa arsalnāka li-n-nāsi rasūlan wa kafā bi-llāhi shahīdā What comes to you of good is from GOD, but what comes to you of evil is from yourself. And We have sent you to the people as a messenger, and sufficient is GOD as Witness. Whatever good reaches you is from GOD, while whatever harm befalls you comes from yourself. We have sent you to humanity as a Messenger, and GOD is sufficient as Witness.

Commentary verse 79

GOD has ordered nature and history, directing them toward the good of those who observe His laws. This good may be realized in this life and in the Hereafter, or only in the latter; this depends on His sovereign and inscrutable will. All the evil that creatures suffer in this life stems solely from disobedience to the Will of the Creator. The misery endured by many is the tragic reflection of the opulence and greed of others. The violence suffered by the innocent is always the consequence of the oppression and brutality of the guilty.

Verses 80–83

Verse Arabic Transliteration English English (ASH)
Man yuṭiʿi ar-rasūla faqad aṭāʿa Allāh wa man tawallā fa-mā arsalnāka ʿalayhim ḥafīẓā He who obeys the Messenger has obeyed GOD; but those who turn away—We have not sent you as a guardian over them. Whoever obeys the Messenger has obeyed GOD; and whoever turns away, We have not sent you as a guardian over them.
4:81 وَيَقُولُونَ طَاعَةٌ فَإِذَا بَرَزُوا مِنْ عِندِكَ بَيَّتَ طَائِفَةٌ مِّنْهُمْ غَيْرَ الَّذِي تَقُولُ ۖ وَاللَّهُ يَكْتُبُ مَا يُبَيِّتُونَ ۖ فَأَعْرِضْ عَنْهُمْ وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ ۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِاللَّهِ وَكِيلًا Wa yaqūlūna ṭāʿah fa idhā barazū min ʿindika bayyata ṭāʾifatun minhum ghayra alladhī taqūl wa Allāhu yaktubu mā yubayyitūna fa aʿriḍ ʿanhum wa tawakkal ʿalā Allāh wa kafā bi-llāhi wakīlā And they say, “Obedience.” But when they leave you, a group of them spend the night planning something other than what you say. But GOD records what they plan by night. So turn away from them and rely upon GOD. And sufficient is GOD as Disposer of affairs. They say: “Obedience.” But when they depart from you, a group among them plots by night something other than what you say. Yet GOD records what they plan. So turn away from them and place your trust in GOD—GOD is sufficient as a disposer of affairs.
4:82 أَفَلَا يَتَدَبَّرُونَ الْقُرْآنَ ۚ وَلَوْ كَانَ مِنْ عِندِ غَيْرِ اللَّهِ لَوَجَدُوا فِيهِ اخْتِلَافًا كَثِيرًا Afalā yatadabbarūna al-qurʾān wa law kāna min ʿindi ghayri Allāhi la-wajadū fīhi ikhtilāfan kathīrā Then do they not reflect upon the Qur’an? If it had been from other than GOD, they would have found within it much contradiction. Do they not reflect upon the Qur’an? Had it been from other than GOD, they would have found within it many contradictions.
4:83 وَإِذَا جَاءَهُمْ أَمْرٌ مِّنَ الْأَمْنِ أَوِ الْخَوْفِ أَذَاعُوا بِهِ ۖ وَلَوْ رَدُّوهُ إِلَى الرَّسُولِ وَإِلَىٰ أُولِي الْأَمْرِ مِنْهُمْ لَعَلِمَهُ الَّذِينَ يَسْتَنبِطُونَهُ مِنْهُمْ ۗ وَلَوْلَا فَضْلُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهُ لَاتَّبَعْتُمُ الشَّيْطَانَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا Wa idhā jāʾahum amrun mina al-amni awi al-khawfi adhāʿū bihi wa law raddūhu ilā ar-rasūli wa ilā ulī al-amri minhum la-ʿalimahu alladhīna yastanbiṭūnahu minhum wa lawlā faḍlu Allāhi ʿalaykum wa raḥmatuhu la-ittabaʿtumu ash-shayṭāna illā qalīlā And when there comes to them information about security or fear, they spread it around. But if they had referred it to the Messenger and to those of authority among them, then those who can draw correct conclusions from it would have known about it. And if not for the favor of GOD upon you and His mercy, you would have followed Satan, except for a few. When news reaches them concerning security or fear, they spread it openly. But if they had referred it to the Messenger and to those entrusted with authority among them, those able to derive understanding would have known it properly. Were it not for the grace of GOD upon you and His mercy, you would have followed Satan—except for a few.

Verses 84–86

Verse Arabic Transliteration English English (ASH)
4:84 فَقَاتِلْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ لَا تُكَلَّفُ إِلَّا نَفْسَكَ ۚ وَحَرِّضِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ۖ عَسَى اللَّهُ أَن يَكُفَّ بَأْسَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا ۚ وَاللَّهُ أَشَدُّ بَأْسًا وَأَشَدُّ تَنكِيلًا Faqātil fī sabīli Allāhi lā tukallafu illā nafsak wa ḥarriḍi al-muʾminīn ʿasā Allāhu an yakuffa baʾsa alladhīna kafarū wa Allāhu ashaddu baʾsan wa ashaddu tankīlā So fight in the cause of GOD; you are not held responsible except for yourself. And encourage the believers that perhaps GOD will restrain the might of those who disbelieve. And GOD is stronger in might and stronger in punishment. So fight in the path of GOD—you are accountable only for yourself—and urge the believers on. Perhaps GOD will restrain the power of those who deny. And GOD is stronger in might and more severe in consequence.
Man yashfaʿ shafāʿatan ḥasanatan yakun lahu naṣībun minhā wa man yashfaʿ shafāʿatan sayyiʾatan yakun lahu kiflun minhā wa kāna Allāhu ʿalā kulli shayʾin muqītā Whoever intercedes for a good cause will have a share of it, and whoever intercedes for an evil cause will have a portion of it. And ever is GOD, over all things, a Keeper. Whoever intercedes for a good cause will have a share in it, and whoever intercedes for an evil cause will bear a portion of it. And GOD is ever over all things a Keeper.
4:86 وَإِذَا حُيِّيْتُم بِتَحِيَّةٍ فَحَيُّوا بِأَحْسَنَ مِنْهَا أَوْ رُدُّوهَا ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ حَسِيبًا Wa idhā ḥuyyītum bi-taḥiyyatin fa-ḥayyū bi-aḥsana minhā aw ruddūhā inna Allāha kāna ʿalā kulli shayʾin ḥasībā And when you are greeted with a greeting, greet with better than it or return it. Indeed, GOD is ever, over all things, an Accountant. When you are greeted with a greeting, respond with something better—or return it in like manner. Indeed, GOD is ever an accountant over all things.
