Gabriel

Gender Masculine

Scripts גַּבְרִיאֵל (Ancient Hebrew) Γαβριήλ (Ancient Greek)

From the Hebrew name גַבְרִיאֵל (Gavri’el) meaning “GOD is my strength”, derived from גֶּבֶר (gever) meaning “strong man”, “to be mighty” and אֵל (‘el) meaning “GOD”. Gabriel is an archangel in the tradition, often appearing as a messenger of GOD. In the Old Testament he is sent to interpret the visions of the prophet Daniel, while in the New Testament he serves as the announcer of the births of John to Zechariah and Jesus to Mary.
According to Islamic tradition he was the angel who dictated the Quran to Muhammad.

Gabriel is one of two named Angels in the Bible, Michael is the other one. Of Michael we know that he’s an archangel but of Gabriel we do not.
Gabriel explains to Daniel some of the most awesome visions contained in the Bible (Daniel 8, 16 and 9, 21), and, more than five centuries later, Gabriel (Γαβριηλ) announces to Zacharias and Mary their respective sons: John to be The Baptist and Jesus Christ (Luke 1, 19 and 1, 26). Gabriel himself submits that he stands in the presence of the LORD (Luke 1, 19), even though that has been promised to all of us (Jude 1, 24).

Gabriel, or Jibril (Arabic: جِبْرِيل‎, romanized: Jibrīl, or Arabic: جبرائيل‎ Jibrāʾīl), is one of the primary archangels and as the Angel of Revelation in Islam.

Exegesis narrates that Muhammad saw Gabriel in his full angelic splendor only twice, the first time being when he received his first revelation. As the Bible portrays Gabriel as a celestial messenger sent to Daniel, Mary, and Zechariah, Islamic tradition holds that Gabriel was sent to numerous pre-Islamic prophets with revelation and divine injunctions, including Adam, whom Muslims believe was consoled by Gabriel some time after the Fall, too. He is known by many names in Islam, such as “keeper of holiness.”

In the Quran, Gabriel appears named in 2, 97 and 66, 4, as well as in 2, 98, where he is mentioned along with Michael (Mīkāʾīl).
