Athaliah

Gender Feminine & Masculine
Scripts עֲתַלְיָה (Ancient Hebrew)

From the verb עתל (‘atal), to be exalted and יה (yah), the Name of the LORD, so “YHWH is exalted” in Hebrew. In the Old Testament this is both a feminine and masculine name. It was borne by the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, who later came to rule Judah as a queen.

Accounts of Athaliah’s life are found in 2 Kings 8, 16 ; 11, 16 and 2Chronicles 22, 10 ; 23, 15 in the Bible. She is believed to have been the daughter of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel of Israel. Athaliah was married to Jehoram of Judah to seal a treaty between the kingdoms of Israel and Judah, and to secure her position Jehoram killed his six brothers. Jehoram became king of Judah in the fifth year of the reign of Jehoram of Israel (2 Kings 8, 16).
