Asaph

Gender Masculine
Scripts אָסָף (Ancient Hebrew)

Asaph in Hebrew אָסָף ‘Āsāp̄ means “To gather” and is the name of three men in the Old Testament.

The parts about Berachiah’s son and Kohath’s descendant refer to the same person.

  • Asaph, the father of Joah (2Kings 18, 18-37) & Asaph, son of Berachiah the Gershonite (2Chronicles 20, 14)

Along with Heman, the grandson of the prophet Samuel (1Chronicles 6, 24, or 1Chronicles 6, 39 in non-Jewish translations) he and his male descendants were selected by King David to worship GOD in song and music (1Chronicles 15, 16-17). He is believed to be the author of Psalm 50 and Psalms 73 through 83.

  • Asaph, a Levite descendant of Kohath (1 Chronicles 26, 1).
  • Asaph, the keeper of the king’s forest under the Persian king Artaxerxes I Longimanus (Nehemiah 2, 8)
