Introduction

The Book of Joel (יואל, Yo’el) belongs to the Nevi’im (Prophets) of the Tanakh and is included among the Twelve Minor Prophets (Tre Asar). Its placement reflects a redactional tradition that gathers shorter prophetic texts into a unified canonical collection.

From a literary and theological perspective, Joel is characterized by a composite structure combining prophetic discourse and poetry. The text centers on the interpretation of a natural calamity—often identified as a locust invasion—as an expression of divine judgment. This event becomes the starting point for a broader reflection on the “day of YHWH,” a key theme in biblical prophecy, understood both as judgment and as a moment of potential restoration.

The transmission of the text is primarily preserved in the Masoretic Text, which forms the authoritative basis of the Hebrew tradition. The Hebrew language of Joel displays strong poetic features, including parallelism and symbolic imagery, reflecting a liturgical and prophetic style. The book also illustrates the interplay between written text and oral tradition in preserving the prophetic message.

Within the Jewish tradition, Joel holds particular significance for its emphasis on teshuvah (repentance/return) and the possibility of communal renewal. Its themes have also influenced later Abrahamic traditions, especially in relation to the concept of the divine spirit and eschatological restoration.
