The Second Letter to the Thessalonians (Greek: Πρὸς Θεσσαλονικεῖς Βʹ Pros Thessalonikeis B) is a short but dense missive. According to tradition it was written by the apostle Paul in response to specific issues that arose in the Thessalonian community after his first letter. The epistle addresses issues related to persecution and misunderstanding regarding the return of the Messiah. Some members of the community had misunderstood the imminence of the Parousia (the return of the Lord) and, in confusion, had stopped living responsibly. Paul, in a firm but pastoral tone, seeks to correct these errors and offer consolation and hope in the midst of tribulation.
This letter, with a strong eschatological overtone, stresses the importance of keeping calm, working diligently and living with discipline as we await the coming of the Lord. The apostle Paul encourages believers not to be troubled by false teachings regarding the end times, reminding them that there are signs that must take place before the return of the Messiah. With theological clarity and moral rigor, Paul exhorts the community to perseverance, admonishes the disordered, and strengthens their hope in GOD’s righteousness.
