Intro
The narrative of Bel and the dragon is one that has been incorporated by much of the Christian canon (Catholic and Orthodox over all) into the Biblical Book of the Prophet Daniel (i.e. chapter 14). The original Septuagint text in Greek survives in a single manuscript called the Codex Chisianus. This chapter, along with chapter 13 (called “Susanna”) is considered deuterocanonical (“belonging to the second canon”). The Text was unknown to early Rabbinic Judaism, and although it is considered canonical by both Catholics and Eastern Orthodox Christians, it is considered non-canonical by most Protestants and is therefore found in the Apocrypha. However, the story is cited by the famous Rabbi Israel ben Moses Najara.
Daniel Chapter 14
The Bel narrative is thus by some canons Daniel Chapter 14. The chapter according to many scholars contains a single story that may have previously represented three separate narratives:
- Bel 14:1-22 which ridicules the ‘worship of idols
- The Dragon 14:23-30 a dragon that the Babylonians worshipped and that the prophet defeated
- The Lion’s Den 14:31-42 in which Daniel thrown into the lions’ den manages to emerge unharmed.

| 35 | καὶ εἶπεν Αμβακουμ κύριε Βαβυλῶνα οὐχ ἑώρακα καὶ τὸν λάκκον οὐ γινώσκω | Kai eipen Ambakoum: Kyrie, Babylōna ouch heōraka kai ton lakkon ou ginōskō. | And Habakkuk said: Lord, I have not seen Babylon, and I do not know the den. | Habakkuk answered: Lord, I have never seen Babylon, and I do not know the den. |
| 36 | καὶ ἐπελάβετο ὁ ἄγγελος κυρίου τῆς κορυφῆς αὐτοῦ καὶ βαστάσας τῆς κόμης τῆς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ ἔθηκεν αὐτὸν εἰς Βαβυλῶνα ἐπάνω τοῦ λάκκου ἐν τῷ ῥοίζῳ τοῦ πνεύματος αὐτοῦ | Kai epelabeto ho angelos kyriou tēs koryphēs autou kai bastasas tēs komēs tēs kephalēs autou ethēken auton eis Babylōna epanō tou lakkou en tō rhoizō tou pneumatos autou. | And the angel of the Lord took hold of the crown of his head, and lifting him by the hair of his head, set him in Babylon above the den by the rush of his spirit. | Then the angel of the Lord took him by the hair and, with the speed of the wind, carried him to Babylon and set him on the edge of the den. |
| 37 | καὶ ἐβόησεν Αμβακουμ λέγων Δανιηλ Δανιηλ λαβὲ τὸ ἄριστον ὃ ἀπέστειλέν σοι ὁ θεός | Kai eboēsen Ambakoum legōn: Daniēl, Daniēl, labe to ariston ho apesteilen soi ho theos. | And Habakkuk cried out, saying: Daniel, Daniel, take the meal that GOD has sent you. | Habakkuk cried out: Daniel, Daniel, take the food that GOD has sent you. |
| 38 | καὶ εἶπεν Δανιηλ ἐμνήσθης γάρ μου ὁ θεός καὶ οὐκ ἐγκατέλιπες τοὺς ἀγαπῶντάς σε | Kai eipen Daniēl: Emnēsthēs gar mou, ho theos, kai ouk enkatelipes tous agapōntas se. | And Daniel said: You have remembered me, O GOD, and You have not abandoned those who love You. | Daniel exclaimed: O GOD, You have remembered me and have not abandoned those who love You. |
| 39 | καὶ ἀναστὰς Δανιηλ ἔφαγεν ὁ δὲ ἄγγελος τοῦ θεοῦ ἀπεκατέστησεν τὸν Αμβακουμ παραχρῆμα εἰς τὸν τόπον αὐτοῦ | Kai anastas Daniēl ephagen; ho de angelos tou theou apekatestēsen ton Ambakoum parachrēma eis ton topon autou. | And Daniel, rising, ate; and the angel of GOD immediately restored Habakkuk to his own place. | Daniel rose and ate, while the angel of GOD immediately returned Habakkuk to his former place. |
| 40 | ὁ δὲ βασιλεὺς ἦλθεν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ ἑβδόμῃ πενθῆσαι τὸν Δανιηλ καὶ ἦλθεν ἐπὶ τὸν λάκκον καὶ ἐνέβλεψεν καὶ ἰδοὺ Δανιηλ καθήμενος | Ho de basileus ēlthen tē hēmera tē hebdomē penthēsai ton Daniēl kai ēlthen epi ton lakkon kai eneblepsen kai idou Daniēl kathēmenos. | And the king came on the seventh day to mourn Daniel, and he came to the den and looked in, and behold, Daniel was sitting. | On the seventh day the king came to mourn Daniel; when he reached the den and looked in, he saw Daniel sitting there. |
| 41 | καὶ ἀναβοήσας φωνῇ μεγάλῃ εἶπεν μέγας εἶ κύριε ὁ θεὸς τοῦ Δανιηλ καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν πλὴν σοῦ ἄλλος | Kai anaboēsas phōnē megalē eipen: Megas ei, kyrie ho theos tou Daniēl, kai ouk estin plēn sou allos. | And crying out with a loud voice, he said: Great are You, Lord GOD of Daniel, and there is no other besides You. | Then he cried out with a loud voice: Great are You, Lord GOD of Daniel, and there is no other GOD besides You. |
| 42 | καὶ ἀνέσπασεν αὐτόν τοὺς δὲ αἰτίους τῆς ἀπωλείας αὐτοῦ ἐνέβαλεν εἰς τὸν λάκκον καὶ κατεβρώθησαν παραχρῆμα ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ | Kai anespasen auton; tous de aitious tēs apōleias autou enebalen eis ton lakkon kai katebrōthēsan parachrēma enōpion autou. | And he drew him up; but those responsible for his destruction he threw into the den, and they were immediately devoured before him. | He brought Daniel out of the den and threw in those who had sought his ruin; they were immediately devoured before his eyes. |
