O believers, be you keepers of justice, witnesses of GOD, and let not the hatred of others make you deviate from evil and turn you away from execution; be you righteous, which is nearer to compassion. And fear GOD; surely GOD is aware of what you do.
(Quran 5, 8)

Commentary:

This verse clearly contains the prescription to remain steadfast in righteousness, without fear or allowing oneself to be diverted by others.

Righteousness and taqwa are inseparable. Anyone who truly believes in GOD, must demonstrate this through righteousness, and in the fulfillment of fairness in justice, from the familiar and everyday with those around us, to the broader society in which we operate. We must not let hatred of our neighbors, another people, or even unbelievers, prevent us from being righteous and harming them, not even because of their enmity towards us. Whoever believes must prove himself different, it is difficult, but the wise man is able to “turn the other cheek” (Mt 5, 38-42) we must be just not only towards our neighbors, but also towards our enemies, because justice is with those who fear GOD. The Creator is aware of everything you do and will give you credit for it. Let us not let hatred drive us to not treat others justly, this is a great challenge, but one that gives a great reward, both in our lives in the present, and in the Hereafter.
