Ecclesiastes

Ecclesiastes (Hebrew: קֹהֶלֶת, Qohelet) is part of the “Writings” (Ketuvim) of the Hebrew Bible and one of the “Wisdom” books of the Christian Old Testament. The title commonly used in English is a Latin transliteration of the Greek translation of the Hebrew word קֹהֶלֶת (Qoelet, but transliterated variously Kohelet, Koheleth, Qohelet or Qohelet ). An unnamed author introduces “The words of Kohelet, son of David, king of Jerusalem” (1:1) and does not use his own voice again until the final verses (12:9-14), where he gives his own thoughts and summarizes the statements of “Kohelet.”

Kohelet states (1, 2) “Vanity of vanities! Everything is useless!”; the Hebrew word hevel, “vapor,” can figuratively mean “insubstantial,” “vain,” “futile,” or “meaningless.” That being said, the next verse presents the basic existential question that the rest of the book deals with, “What advantage has man for all his toil, in which he toils under the Sun?” expressing that the lives of both the wise and the foolish all end similarly in death.
While Kohelet advocates wisdom as a means to a well-lived earthly life, he is unable to ascribe eternal significance to it. In light of this perceived meaninglessness, he suggests that human beings should enjoy the simple pleasures of daily life, such as eating, drinking, and enjoying one’s work, which are gifts from the hand of GOD. The book concludes with an injunction to “Fear GOD and keep his commandments; for this is the whole of mankind. For every deed GOD will bring into judgment, for every hidden deed, whether good or bad.”

I did not withhold my heart from any pleasure, For my heart rejoiced in all my labor; And this was my reward from all my labor.	10. 11. אֶת־ הַכֹּ֥ל עָשָׂ֖ה יָפֶ֣ה בְעִתּ֑וֹ גַּ֤ם אֶת־ הָעֹלָם֙ נָתַ֣ן בְּלִבָּ֔ם מִבְּלִ֞י אֲשֶׁ֧ר לֹא־ יִמְצָ֣א הָאָדָ֗ם אֶת־ הַֽמַּעֲשֶׂ֛ה אֲשֶׁר־ עָשָׂ֥ה הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים מֵרֹ֥אשׁ וְעַד־ סֽוֹף׃	11. ’eṯ- hak·kōl ‘ā·śāh yā·p̄eh ḇə·‘it·tōw; gam ’eṯ- hā·‘ō·lām nā·ṯan bə·lib·bām, mib·bə·lî ’ă·šer lō- yim·ṣā hā·’ā·ḏām, ’eṯ- ham·ma·‘ă·śeh ’ă·šer- ‘ā·śāh hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm mê·rōš wə·‘aḏ- sō·wp̄.	11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.	11. Nothing can be added to it, And nothing taken from it. God does it, that men should fear before Him.	14. 3. אִם־ יוֹלִ֣יד אִ֣ישׁ מֵאָ֡ה וְשָׁנִים֩ רַבּ֨וֹת יִֽחְיֶ֜ה וְרַ֣ב ׀ שֶׁיִּהְי֣וּ יְמֵֽי־ שָׁנָ֗יו וְנַפְשׁוֹ֙ לֹא־ תִשְׂבַּ֣ע מִן־ הַטּוֹבָ֔ה וְגַם־ קְבוּרָ֖ה לֹא־ הָ֣יְתָה לּ֑וֹ אָמַ֕רְתִּי ט֥וֹב מִמֶּ֖נּוּ הַנָּֽפֶל׃	3. ’im- yō·w·lîḏ ’îš mê·’āh wə·šā·nîm rab·bō·wṯ yiḥ·yeh wə·raḇ še·yih·yū yə·mê- šā·nāw, wə·nap̄·šōw lō- ṯiś·ba‘ min- haṭ·ṭō·w·ḇāh, wə·ḡam- qə·ḇū·rāh lō- hā·yə·ṯāh lōw; ’ā·mar·tî ṭō·wḇ mim·men·nū han·nā·p̄el.	3 If a man begets a hundred children and lives many years, so that the days of his years are many, but his soul is not satisfied with goodness, or indeed he has no burial, I say that a stillborn child is better than he–	3. 4. כִּֽי־ בַהֶ֥בֶל בָּ֖א וּבַחֹ֣שֶׁךְ יֵלֵ֑ךְ וּבַחֹ֖שֶׁךְ שְׁמ֥וֹ יְכֻסֶּֽה׃	4. kî- ḇa·he·ḇel bā ū·ḇa·ḥō·šeḵ yê·lêḵ; ū·ḇa·ḥō·šeḵ šə·mōw yə·ḵus·seh.	4 for it comes in vanity and departs in darkness, and its name is covered with darkness.	4. 6. וְאִלּ֣וּ חָיָ֗ה אֶ֤לֶף שָׁנִים֙ פַּעֲמַ֔יִם וְטוֹבָ֖ה לֹ֣א רָאָ֑ה הֲלֹ֛א אֶל־ מָק֥וֹם אֶחָ֖ד הַכֹּ֥ל הוֹלֵֽךְ׃	6. wə·’il·lū ḥā·yāh, ’e·lep̄ šā·nîm pa·‘ă·ma·yim, wə·ṭō·w·ḇāh lō rā·’āh; hă·lō ’el- mā·qō·wm ’e·ḥāḏ hak·kōl hō·w·lêḵ.	6 even if he lives a thousand years twice–but has not seen goodness. 7. כָּל־ עֲמַ֥ל הָאָדָ֖ם לְפִ֑יהוּ וְגַם־ הַנֶּ֖פֶשׁ לֹ֥א תִמָּלֵֽא׃	7. kāl- ‘ă·mal hā·’ā·ḏām lə·p̄î·hū; wə·ḡam- han·ne·p̄eš lō ṯim·mā·lê.	7 All the labor of man is for his mouth, And yet the soul is not satisfied.	7. 1. כִּ֣י אֶת־ כָּל־ זֶ֞ה נָתַ֤תִּי אֶל־ לִבִּי֙ וְלָב֣וּר אֶת־ כָּל־ זֶ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר הַצַּדִּיקִ֧ים וְהַחֲכָמִ֛ים וַעֲבָדֵיהֶ֖ם בְּיַ֣ד הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים גַּֽם־ אַהֲבָ֣ה גַם־ שִׂנְאָ֗ה אֵ֤ין יוֹדֵ֙עַ֙ הָֽאָדָ֔ם הַכֹּ֖ל לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃	1. kî ’eṯ- kāl- zeh nā·ṯat·tî ’el- lib·bî wə·lā·ḇūr ’eṯ- kāl- zeh, ’ă·šer haṣ·ṣad·dî·qîm wə·ha·ḥă·ḵā·mîm wa·‘ă·ḇā·ḏê·hem bə·yaḏ hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm; gam- ’a·hă·ḇāh ḡam- śin·’āh, ’ên yō·w·ḏê·a‘ hā·’ā·ḏām, hak·kōl lip̄·nê·hem.	1 For I considered all this in my heart, so that I could declare it all: that the righteous and the wise and their works are in the hand of God. People know neither love nor hatred by anything they see before them.	1. As is the good, so is the sinner; He who takes an oath as he who fears an oath.	2. Truly the hearts of the sons of men are full of evil; madness is in their hearts while they live, and after that they go to the dead.	3. Nevertheless the poor man’s wisdom is despised, And his words are not heard.	16. 5. גַּ֣ם מִגָּבֹ֤הַּ יִרָ֙אוּ֙ וְחַתְחַתִּ֣ים בַּדֶּ֔רֶךְ וְיָנֵ֤אץ הַשָּׁקֵד֙ וְיִסְתַּבֵּ֣ל הֶֽחָגָ֔ב וְתָפֵ֖ר הָֽאֲבִיּוֹנָ֑ה כִּֽי־ הֹלֵ֤ךְ הָאָדָם֙ אֶל־ בֵּ֣ית עוֹלָמ֔וֹ וְסָבְב֥וּ בָשּׁ֖וּק‪‬‪‬‪‬ הַסֹּפְדִֽים׃	5. gam mig·gā·ḇō·ah yi·rā·’ū wə·ḥaṯ·ḥat·tîm bad·de·reḵ, wə·yā·nêṣ haš·šā·qêḏ wə·yis·tab·bêl he·ḥā·ḡāḇ, wə·ṯā·p̄êr hā·’ă·ḇî·yō·w·nāh; kî- hō·lêḵ hā·’ā·ḏām ’el- bêṯ ‘ō·w·lā·mōw, wə·sā·ḇə·ḇū ḇaš·šūq has·sō·p̄ə·ḏîm.	5 Also they are afraid of height, And of terrors in the way; When the almond tree blossoms, The grasshopper is a burden, And desire fails. 6. עַ֣ד אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־ [ירחק] (יֵרָתֵק֙) חֶ֣בֶל הַכֶּ֔סֶף וְתָרֻ֖ץ גֻּלַּ֣ת הַזָּהָ֑ב וְתִשָּׁ֤בֶר כַּד֙ עַל־ הַמַּבּ֔וּעַ וְנָרֹ֥ץ הַגַּלְגַּ֖ל אֶל־ הַבּֽוֹר׃	6. ‘aḏ ’ă·šer lō- (yê·rā·ṯêq q) ḥe·ḇel hak·ke·sep̄, wə·ṯā·ruṣ gul·laṯ haz·zā·hāḇ; wə·ṯiš·šā·ḇer kaḏ ‘al- ham·mab·bū·a‘, wə·nā·rōṣ hag·gal·gal ’el- hab·bō·wr.	6 Remember your Creator before the silver cord is loosed, Or the golden bowl is broken, Or the pitcher shattered at the fountain, Or the wheel broken at the well.	6. i due battenti della porta si chiudono sulla strada perché diminuisce il rumore della macina; in cui l’uomo si alza al canto dell’uccello, tutte le figlie del canto si affievoliscono,
7. וְיָשֹׁ֧ב הֶעָפָ֛ר עַל־ הָאָ֖רֶץ כְּשֶׁהָיָ֑ה וְהָר֣וּחַ תָּשׁ֔וּב אֶל־ הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר נְתָנָֽהּ׃	7. wə·yā·šōḇ he·‘ā·p̄ār ‘al- hā·’ā·reṣ kə·še·hā·yāh; wə·hā·rū·aḥ tā·šūḇ, ’el- hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm ’ă·šer nə·ṯā·nāh.	7 Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, And the spirit will return to God who gave it.	7. in cui uno ha paura delle alture, ha degli spaventi mentre cammina, in cui fiorisce il mandorlo, la locusta si fa pesante e il cappero non fa più effetto, perché l’uomo se ne va alla sua dimora eterna e i piagnoni percorrono le strade;
8. הֲבֵ֧ל הֲבָלִ֛ים אָמַ֥ר הַקּוֹהֶ֖לֶת הַכֹּ֥ל הָֽבֶל׃	8. hă·ḇêl hă·ḇā·lîm ’ā·mar haq·qō·w·he·leṯ hak·kōl hā·ḇel.	8 “Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher, “All is vanity.”	8. prima che il cordone d’argento si stacchi, il vaso d’oro si spezzi, la brocca si rompa sulla fonte, la ruota infranta cada nel pozzo;
9. וְיֹתֵ֕ר שֶׁהָיָ֥ה קֹהֶ֖לֶת חָכָ֑ם ע֗וֹד לִמַּד־ דַּ֙עַת֙ אֶת־ הָעָ֔ם וְאִזֵּ֣ן וְחִקֵּ֔ר תִּקֵּ֖ן מְשָׁלִ֥ים הַרְבֵּֽה׃	9. wə·yō·ṯêr še·hā·yāh qō·he·leṯ ḥā·ḵām; ‘ō·wḏ, lim·maḏ- da·‘aṯ ’eṯ- hā·‘ām, wə·’iz·zên wə·ḥiq·qêr, tiq·qên mə·šā·lîm har·bêh.	9 And moreover, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yes, he pondered and sought out and set in order many proverbs.	9. prima che la polvere torni alla terra com’era prima e lo spirito torni a Dio che l’ha dato.
10. בִּקֵּ֣שׁ קֹהֶ֔לֶת לִמְצֹ֖א דִּבְרֵי־ חֵ֑פֶץ וְכָת֥וּב יֹ֖שֶׁר דִּבְרֵ֥י אֱמֶֽת׃	10. biq·qêš qō·he·leṯ, lim·ṣō diḇ·rê- ḥê·p̄eṣ; wə·ḵā·ṯūḇ yō·šer diḇ·rê ’ĕ·meṯ.	10 The Preacher sought to find acceptable words; and what was written was upright–words of truth.	10. «Vanità delle vanità», dice Qoelet, «tutto è vanità».
11. דִּבְרֵ֤י חֲכָמִים֙ כַּדָּ֣רְבֹנ֔וֹת וּֽכְמַשְׂמְר֥וֹת נְטוּעִ֖ים בַּעֲלֵ֣י אֲסֻפּ֑וֹת נִתְּנ֖וּ מֵרֹעֶ֥ה אֶחָֽד׃	11. diḇ·rê ḥă·ḵā·mîm kad·dā·rə·ḇō·nō·wṯ, ū·ḵə·maś·mə·rō·wṯ nə·ṭū·‘îm ba·‘ă·lê ’ă·sup·pō·wṯ; nit·tə·nū mê·rō·‘eh ’e·ḥāḏ.	11 The words of the wise are like goads, and the words of scholars are like well-driven nails, given by one Shepherd.	11. Qoelet, oltre a essere un saggio, ha anche insegnato al popolo la scienza e ha ponderato, scrutato e messo in ordine un gran numero di sentenze.
12. וְיֹתֵ֥ר מֵהֵ֖מָּה בְּנִ֣י הִזָּהֵ֑ר עֲשׂ֨וֹת סְפָרִ֤ים הַרְבֵּה֙ אֵ֣ין קֵ֔ץ וְלַ֥הַג הַרְבֵּ֖ה יְגִעַ֥ת בָּשָֽׂר׃	12. wə·yō·ṯêr mê·hêm·māh bə·nî hiz·zā·hêr; ‘ă·śō·wṯ sə·p̄ā·rîm har·bêh ’ên qêṣ, wə·la·haḡ har·bêh yə·ḡi·‘aṯ bā·śār.	12 And further, my son, be admonished by these. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is wearisome to the flesh.	12. Qoelet si è applicato a trovare parole gradevoli; esse sono state scritte con rettitudine e sono parole di verità.
13. ס֥וֹף דָּבָ֖ר הַכֹּ֣ל נִשְׁמָ֑ע אֶת־ הָאֱלֹהִ֤ים יְרָא֙ וְאֶת־ מִצְוֺתָ֣יו שְׁמ֔וֹר כִּי־ זֶ֖ה כָּל־ הָאָדָֽם׃	13. sō·wp̄ dā·ḇār hak·kōl niš·mā‘; ’eṯ- hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm yə·rā wə·’eṯ- miṣ·wō·ṯāw šə·mō·wr, kî- zeh kāl- hā·’ā·ḏām.	13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, For this is man’s all.	13. Le parole dei saggi sono come degli stimoli e le collezioni delle sentenze sono come chiodi ben piantati; esse sono date da un solo pastore.
14. כִּ֤י אֶת־ כָּל־ מַֽעֲשֶׂ֔ה הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים יָבִ֥א בְמִשְׁפָּ֖ט עַ֣ל כָּל־ נֶעְלָ֑ם אִם־ ט֖וֹב וְאִם־ רָֽע׃	14. kî ’eṯ- kāl- ma·‘ă·śeh, hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm yā·ḇi ḇə·miš·pāṭ ‘al kāl- ne‘·lām; ’im- ṭō·wḇ wə·’im- rā‘.	14 For God will bring every work into judgment, Including every secret thing, Whether good or evil.	14. Del resto, figlio mio, sta’ in guardia: si fanno dei libri in numero infinito; molto studiare è una fatica per il corpo.
