Quran 2, 155 GOD is He besides Whom there is no god, the Everliving, the Self-subsisting by Whom all subsist; slumber does not overtake Him nor sleep; whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth is His; who is he that can intercede with Him but by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they cannot comprehend anything out of His knowledge except what He pleases, His majesty* extends over the heavens and the earth, and the preservation of them both tires Him not, and He is the Most High, the Great.
This verse is called “ayat-al kursi”, the “verse of the Throne” which contains a magnificent summary of some of the characteristics of the CREATOR.
There is no God except GOD, that is, there is no one worthy of worship in all existence except the CREATOR, the Living One, the Eternal One, the One who is constantly engaged in the administration of His creation. Drowsiness does not catch Him nor sleep, to Him belongs all that is in the heavens and on earth as riches and every creature, no one can intercede with Him except with His permission. He knows what has been, that is, the creation, and what is to come in this World and of the Hereafter; and they comprehend nothing of His Knowledge, that is, they know nothing of what He knows, except those whom He wishes to inform by His messengers. His throne encompasses the heavens and the earth, it is said that His knowledge encompasses both; it is also said that the kursī “throne” itself encompasses them because of its vastness as in the hadīth it is written “The seven heavens with respect to the kursī are like seven silver coins lying in a metal shield of armor.” preserving them, the heavens and the earth, does not weary Him, does not burden Him; He is the Sublime over His creation by virtue of His subjection of them, the Tremendous the Great.
* The Arabic word كُرْسِيُّهُ (kur’siyyuhu) is usually translated as “Throne” but can also be understood as “Majesty” or “Knowledge”
